UPDATE: Derek Ponamsky of BayouBengalsInsider.com reports that Les Miles has already talked with four candidates (i.e., he knew that Gary Crowton would not be back), but the only name that Ponamsky can confirm is Arizona QB coach Frank Scelfo, a Louisiana native who has been OC at Tulane and Louisiana Tech (under Derek Dooley).
Sources are also telling Ponamsky that Miles is likely to promote a current assistant to OC and then hire a QB coach, but that contradicts what Bruce Feldman (see below) and Bryan Lazare of TigerBait.com are hearing.
---
ESPN The Magazine's Bruce Feldman tweets that a source says that LSU coach Les Miles will look outside the program for his next offensive coordinator, which means that WR coach Billy Gonzales -- who left Florida reportedly because he wasn't happy about being bypassed for the OC job after Dan Mullen went to Mississippi State -- might be sending out resumes.
Tennessee OC Jim Chaney was mentioned as a possible replacement for Gary Crowton on Wednesday during a radio call-in show. Chaney was inherited by Vols coach Derek Dooley, so we imagine that Dooley wouldn't be heartbroken if Chaney left. Chaney and Miles have never worked together but obviously crossed paths these last two years in the SEC.
A user at TigerDroppings.com has been compiling a list of possible OC candidates since Dec. 1, and it includes the likes of TCU co-OC Justin Fuente, former Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB coach Steve Logan (a former Miles colleague at Colorado), ever-popular Wisconsin OC Paul Chryst and Jacksonville Jaguars WR coach Todd Monken (a former Miles assistant at Oklahoma State and LSU), among others.
FootballScoop.com says that Miles has interest in Fuente and Washington OC Doug Nussmeier, who is also on the TigerDroppings list.
More names as we hear them.
