So, not to be ugly -- but, isn't shooting something that is native to Africa in a fenced in area in MS kind of like harpooning a great white shark in False River? I mean, sure, it's cool and all, and definitely something that will create some great conversations, but it isn't exactly a HUGE accomplishment.

Sorry - I'm impressed with the process of hunting animals in their native habitat. And, I applaud so many people on the OB that talk about how they let the younger deer go and manage their deer population, which is what we practice on our lease. I am impressed with hunters that go on Safari and get their trophy in their native habitat. But, shooting something that huge in a fenced area -- just doesn't seem incredibly challenging.

WTF's an oryx? It's obviously not native to the boot, so booooooooooooo. I bet it costed your buddy a pretty penny to kill someones pet inside their fence. Don't see the fun in it. I'd rather kill a doe in a managment area rite here in central La.

You have a point, but if you hunt in the hill country I bet every third ranch has exotics so you know what it's about. Some people can't afford to spend $15k on a safari and would rather save $13500 and shoot one in MS. Personally I agree with you, but I won't try to make someone look bad for shooting an exotic.

yes - you are 100% right. There are a ton of exotics scattered around here.

And, my comments were a bit a-hole-ish. Sorry about that.

They have an open range season for these in some areas of NM.

Last time I was driving through NM, I saw one just standing near the side of the road. Free range. Kinda strange to see a native African species like that here.

Exotics are about the only type of animal I would be willing to hunt in a High Fence. #1 I like the fact they are kept out of the natural habitat. We have enough problem with specifies competing for food. Places in West TX are over run with exotics because outfitters just got tired of dealing them and opened the gates.

And there may not be a better tasting animal than an Axis.

The Oryx is better tasting than the axis. I've killed Blackbuck antelope, Sitka, axis and oryx. Oryx is by far the best of those. Then the Sitka(cousin to the elk), then the Axis. At least that's how I'd rank them.

Ive never been but I would bet hunting them in Africa would probably be a similar experience. There is big money in it for these guided tours/ranches so you want to be able to guarantee customers get kills when they come to hunt whether it be in Africa or MS. I would say that anytime you can plan for certain in advance the day or small block of days you are going to kill a specific animal (exotic or local) it really becomes less "hunting", but thats just because to me hunting involves a sense of uncertainty and working to catch the beast. I guess you could use the term 'harvesting' for the activity described in the OP.

You can put in for a once in a lifetime lottery on white sands missle range to hunt them. Think the private ranchers get tags also. They were introduced there about 30 years ago and have become somewhat of a problem.
