Need advice: What kind of message should I send

So, I go to New York last week to shake some hands and do the "networking thing" and a couple of days ago, a VP at a asset management fund adds me as a contact on linkedin.

I was kind of hoping he might shoot me a message, but it looks like I need to initiate contact.

The downside: I have no idea what to say without being creepy. This is definitely not something covered in the handbook.

Any suggestions?

TIA

ETA Details:

I don't know the guy, but we have one mutual friend who is a VP at another Asset management shop.

My first instinct is to call him, because it makes it a lot more personal. Any sort of facebook, linkedin message can be semi-creepy, and you might be sweating it for a week when he hasn't even read it.

I wouldn't wait on him. This is a scenario where it may pay off HUGE to be proactive. Give him a call.

If you have his email, then maybe a short message about it being great meeting him and you wish him a happy holidays. I don't know if you would want to include anything about being interested in a job...

If he is a

getting the phone number should not be a problem.

You want to make contact before he forgets who you are.

Never met the guy.

That is what is making this so hard not to come off as creepy.

Dear ________,

It was a pleasure meeting you in New York. I've always been interested in this side of asset management so getting a "birds eye view" was appreciated. If at some point your firm is looking for competent and highly dedicated employees, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Well, who did you meet that told him about you?

Because evidently he knows of you somehow....

(maybe you already said this and I missed it from earlier in the thread?)

Wait, he didn't even shake this guy's hand? If that's the case, my email will sound absolutely dumb.

Sorry,

I'm writing this from work and I've got 1000 things going on right now.

I edited to add the details.

We have one mutual connection who is a VP at Paulson.

Tell him you post on TD, and what your screen name is.

This. He initiated the friend request on LinkedIn. No contact from there can be creepy. He initiated it.

I got the above message from a guy I recently started following on Seeking Alpha. I really thought it was great for some reason. No one else had ever done that.

You've gotten some decent advice - but decent at best.

You're going to definitely want to mention the name of your mutual contact; that way he'll feel on the hook to get back to you. I'd tell you more if you gave some more context. I don't understand why he added you if you've never met him.? Does he know you share a contact Paulson?
