The dynamics have drastically changed since conference realignment talk this summer. The t.u. fanbase was the one crying "what about our rivalry?" while the A&M fanbase sent a clear message to our administration that we are a lot more excited about playing in the SEC where pretty much every game is against a big time program. I work in the Texas Legislature and I can tell you that there was a great deal of pressure being applied by the Baylor and Tech crowd to keep it together. Texas was with them because they served their purpose of dragging us all to the PAC-10. While A&M may have appeared to be following t.u., that is absolutely not the case. If so, we would have just followed them to the PAC-10 as they wanted. Staying in the Big 12 essentially bought more time to make a more informed decision instead of just reacting. Our administration is absolutely aware that 90% of our alumni want to go to the SEC. We know we'd get killed for a good many years, but it would energize our program in an immeasurable way.

A&M would be a much better fit for the SEC. Your schools actually have traditions. Some of you may make fun of ours, but go check out the other Big 12 schools. Zero culture whatsoever. No atmosphere. The tailgating is either 100% lame and/or 100% corporate sponsored (t.u.). Fans are ridiculously hot and cold. SEC fans seem to stick with their schools through thick and thin as do we. The other Big 12 schools (aside from Nebraska--RIP) see loyalty as a negative.

Good post..You guys had the upper hand and put U.T. in their place during the realignment talk, but I don't think A&M will ever be able to pull the trigger and leave the state of Texas.

One thing that helps is that TCU left to go to the Big East and not so much as a peep was made from Legislature. The smaller programs like Baylor are going to have a hard time arguing that we must all maintain the status quo when the most highly ranked team in the state of Texas changed conferences. The Higher Education Chair was 100% acting on behalf of a few very powerful Baylor alumni who are heavy Republican donors. I'm not sure why Baylor doesn't just go to a different conference that they can at least somewhat consistently compete in football and possibly dominate in sports like basketball and baseball.

Another thing that helps is that all state universities in Texas are about to have yet another severe cut from the Legislature. This has been happening for a while and the #1 argument for tuition deregulation was that the universities needed to be less dependent on state money. Deregulating tuition has seriously cut the number of people who can afford to attend state schools as it is. That was prior to the current $25 Billion budget shortfall that will lead to even more severe cuts that will happen this spring.

Bottom line being that the Legislature is going to have a lot less influence over these decisions when they are not giving anywhere near the financial support and basically leaving state schools to figure out how to cover costs. Energizing a fanbase means more donations not only to the 12th Man Foundation, but other programs which leads to the ability to keep improving academic facilities all across campus, setting up scholarships, etc. Between that and the massive push from alumni to make the switch, it really is just a matter of whether the offer is still on the table as Slive has indicated and timing.
