Coaching makes all the difference. A post borrowed from UT's board:

quote:

Texas was that bad when Mack took it over: recruiting in state was fricked; the culture was apathetic, the program was second tier at best (on par with, say, West Virginia or Ole Miss today), and the brand was an out-dated, uncool former icon, like Sears or Chrysler.
In the 92-93 timeframe, there were real discussions in the student body about whether we needed better school colors because burnt orange was ugly, and when you went to games there were always more people wearing navy blue shirts that said texas in white letters than Orange shirts with the horns logo on them.
An employee of the football program told me in 1995 that the coaches were frustrated that the Texas fan base felt entitled to being a top ten program, and we needed to get used to the idea that our football program was more on a level with Stanford or Cal than it was with Florida State or Texas A&M.

Mack changed all that, more or less single-handedly, and he can stay as long as he wants.

Eventually, even the best coaches become complacent. That's what happened with Texas. Be happy Les is still very passionate!

You will not be very well liked around here if you continue to stump the Les haters.

Lol. I'd pay to see Les whip out a bag of TS grass, roll a big fat one and smoke it during warm-ups at the cotton bowl. Then tell the sports news chick that "the grass in TS smokes the best and when we travel as a team I always bring my own!"

Maybe Mack needs to read the handwriting on the wall and retire--Muschamp isn't going to wait forever. Mack needs to make the 2011 season be his final one at UT.

no worries, Les has been looking to change his brand of gum and the turf at Jerry's World should be perfect.

Is it coaching?? Is it our outstanding recruiting??

I think it's a combination. We have been lucky to have players who have made clutch plays when needed to. They don't quit, fight to the end, and always seem to believe they have a shot. Talent plays a large part in this, but the coaches do deserve some credit as well.

Another element, I think, is our kicking game. I've become accustomed now to having an excellent kicking game, but when you watch many other college teams, it really makes me take notice of LSU's kicking game. It's not just the field goal kicking (although that has been pretty darned good) but the whole bit: the kick coverage, kick return, and the punting. We've had a few breakdowns, but in sum it has been so huge.

Take Jasper, for instance. This guy not only booted 23 or 24 field goals this year (including 2 from 50+!) but also he punted for a 40 yd avg with more than half being downed inside the 20. Helton's punt numbers were also impressive. When you combine that kind of punting with good coverage and few turnovers, you force teams to drive 80-90 yds to score every possession. Even good offensive teams can falter under these circumstances. At the very least you can minimize their scoring (see Auburn).

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that I really appreciate Miles' seeming emphasis on the kicking game. It's been a big part of LSU's success.

Now Mack has fired his O.C., O.L. coach, WR coach, and possibly another, and will be reassigning "Fat Dog" Madden, the S&C Coach. Because Mack got soft in the CEO/P.R. role, his team got soft, and now the Texas program is a dumpster fire

Jeff "Mad dog" Madden is one of the absolute BEST Strentgh and Conditioning coaches in college football. He's the current President of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, of which I'm also a member. I'd rank him head and shoulders above LSU's Tom Moffit or 'Bama's Scott Cochran (and those two are invaluable to their respective programs).

What the hell is Macky B thinking?

fastroper,

The S&C world is a funny world, with lots of ego and opinion. There is no doubt that Mad Dog was THE BEST a decade ago. But look at Texas' teams the last two or three years ...

They are full of 4* and 5* recruits, but look small and soft compared to S.E.C. teams. Hell, even A&M physically whipped them on the lines this year, with multiple true freshmen starting / playing.

Texas is at a crossroads, and the deep-pocket donors want massive changes. Mack is not standing up to them...do you think he wanted to fire his long-time friend Greg Davis? Madden will get the same treatment, just probably after recruiting season, to minimize turbulence.

Smoke Ring:
The Aggies also have a damned good S&C Coach with Dave Kennedy. I'd rank him up there in the top 10.

We've been very pleased with Coach Kennedy; for the first time in a long team, our football team is again "looking" like a team is supposed to (big frame but trim, nice mix of "show" muscles and "go" muscles on the skill positions, etc.)

FWIW, I'd quit my job tomorrow if I could have the knowledge and intensity to be a S&C Coach at a College

The SEC was worse this year than it has been in a long time.

Our guys play hard and will never give up. These young guys love Les and have faith in him.

yep...sure looks to be the case. I've said it here before but for all the criticism Miles has taken, this team has overachieved and that to me is at least partly attributable to good coaching. Think about it, this team won 10 games with one of the worst offenses in the country!! It's no accident that they still pulled out 10 wins. Look at the schools that didn't get consistent QB play, such as Texas and Florida, and you see just how great a job these guys did in getting to 10 wins and just being a touchdown away from being in a BCS Bowl.

Those winning TDs came from the same guy:
two costly plays by the same DB in which he went for the aggressive move instead of stopping the player and in one case using the clock at the end of the half.

Along the lines of the O.P....

I remember a couple seasons ago people here having big debates over the "team of the decade". Everyone pretty much had... LSU, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, UF, OSU, and maybe a couple others (random order).

Now who would us/we/you LSU fans want to switch spots with of all those teams mentioned? Personally I really like where LSU is heading. I think most people had us 3rd in their "opinion" of the "team of the decade". I think we surely have jumped into the top spot.

Look at UT now. Look at USC. And what of UF? Gotta say LSU has had the most staying power. I can honestly say I love where this team is right now. I'm very excited about the future of LSU. And I'm giddy as a school girl about what LSU has accomplished, and continues to accomplish while I look around and see sinking ships like UT, USC, and soon to be UF.

It's great to be an L.S.U. Tiger!
