The new Redfield line is solid. Leupold acquired them after they changed hands several times. I believe the Redfield scope components are now made and/or assembled in the same Oregon production facility as Leupold. Also, I bought a 3X9X40 Redfield and put it on my varmint rig and I've been very pleased with it.

yeah, looks like all the 40mm are under 250 but the others are over. I have a 3-9X50mm and like it.

Monarch is the top, Prostaff is the bottom.

I have a Buckmaster on one of my rifles and I hate it. I'll be replacing it this summer.

Yeah, I have the Buckmaster one of my rifles. I HATE IT. I will say that it holds zero fairly well though. For $250, anything you get is going to be a turd. I have the Rifleman on a 45-70 and it will not hold zero.

I've got two Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40's and I think it's the best scope for the money. (Special right now at BPS, 120$ I think)
Now, if you plan on shooting over 300 yds, you may want a higher magnification.

Kinda looking for one myself. I don't shoot my rifle but once-twice a year so I wasn't looking to break the bank. Here is a review I found on the Redfield Revolution 4-12*40. Looks pretty respectable. Other reviews appear comparable.

Bud's price 4-12*40
May price 3-9*40
Trophy's 3-9*50

If you get a cheap scope, at least get a 12 x 40. Redfield would be my choice if I had to make it...

Why? Are they not clear enough? Do they not hold zero? Will they fog up in that crucial moment?

I just don't get this mentality. But, I still have a tube type TV as well.

I'm not saying put a 39.99 scope on a rifle, but the 150$ scopes are really good. And, there is no way the VX3 is 400$ better than the ProStaff.
