I saw that roast beef poboy contest on last night. Both looked really good. Parkway won in all categories. N.O. natives, how does it stack up compared to the rest of the city? T.V. shows probably only show the ones who pay for marketing, not actually the best poboy...

I'm not a New Orleans native, but have spent a lot of time there eating poboys. I can tell you that Parkway's roast beef is my favorite in the city.

If you don't like Parkways roast beef you don't like roast beef. And actually my favorite Parkway po boy is fried oysters dressed with bacon. Best poboy ever period.

I had a good one at GG s in Riverridge the other day.

Parkway is legit. Tracey's (Parasol's) is a different style. The roast beef is all debris. It's usually more wet. My wife likes Parasol's. I like Parkway.

Here's the deal, though, if the french bread is day-old, it won't be as good. Fresh po-boy bread is soft inside and crunchy on the outside, but not "cut-your-mouth" crunchy.

Here's some other places that stack up to those previously mentioned: FredRick's on St. Charles does VERY GOOD po-boys. The roast beef there is soft sliced, not debris. Magazine St. Po-boys does some good ones, too. They're a direct competitor to Parasol's, just two blocks away. They're roast beef is debris style, but also very good.

I remember liking Johnny's in the French Quarter, but as I recall, it's more hit or miss with the freshness of the bread.

Truthfully, the little corner markets/gas stations do pretty damn good po-boys in N.O. Many are run by Vietnamese, or a mix of vietnamese and blacks, but they sure have figured out how to make a good po-boy. And let's face it, it's not that hard if you have good bread.

I like Adam's St. Grocery for shrimp po-boys. Most Danny and Clyde's are decent.

What's that place in Metairie on Transcontinental and Airline? Best Stop? They have the debris roast beef, but they are very good.

Staying in Metairie, some people like Parrain's, but I have a personal fued with that old arse wipe, so I don't go there no more.

Three more that get good reviews: Guys Po-Boys on Magazine, Frankie and Johnnies on Arabella near Tchoup, and Mother's. I don't put these at the top of the list, but the are better tahn anything in Baton Rouge (sorry, guys, and I'm a B.R. native!).

Avoid Domilice's, in my opinion. Too inconsistent.

My personal top two are Parkway Bakery, and FredRick's (hole-in-the-wall) on St. Charles.

Its by far my favorite roast beef poboy anywhere.

The surf and turf version is good for a change of pace too. (fried shrimp on roast beef)
