Is the single player RPG dying?

How many really good single player RPGS come out now? Seems like they are either crap or the good ones are being developed as mmorpgs . Everyone seems to want a piece of the monthly subscription money.
There are some rumors that the next elder scrolls will be a mmorpg which will piss me off to no end since they are about the only company that puts our solid RPGs.
What say you?
Yes Dragon Age was good and we have a new one coming out next year and a new Dungeon Siege. Diablo will probably come out some time in the next 30 years.
Still seems like slim pickings for RPGs.

It seems like Bethesda is the only company that makes quality single player RPGs anymore.

Sad thing is it seems like single player RPGs would be the best genre for utilizing the new technology. I did enjoy dragon age but morrowind was probably the best ever

Follow the money.....Last 2 COD games should be a pretty solid barometer of what the gaming trend is. Console games , which are pretty much the gaming system of choice, dont support MMORP games. Sorry

Demon Souls on the PS3 was awesome. If you have a PS3, I wouldn't hesitate to get it. It got an 89 on metacritic and it is the best RPG PS3 exclusive.
Of course shooters are the most popular genre, but if EA makes a WoW type game on console, I could see it being popular.

EQ:Next? Wasn't that supposed to be for PS3 as well as PC?

Mindless, thoughtless shooter games are what is becoming popular. RPGs simply require too much thought and too much patience to play. I haven't played Dragon Age, not big on those dungeons and dragons type games, but Fallout 3 was one of the best games I've played and I am very much looking forward to New Vegas. You're right though, lots of RPG seems to be dying out.

2 reasons I think.
Most of the recent single player RPG's have been sub-par.
More and more people seem to want their gaming time to be a social event.
I play LOTRO. Why would I want to play a single player RPG when I can be online playing LOTRO with my friends as a group.

Personally I prefer single player RPG's to MMO's.
I played WoW for 3 years, and loved it at first. But once got into a high end guild doing high end game content it became too much of a job. If you didn't have 4 hours to devote at one time it wasn't even worth logging in. frick that.
I enjoy single player RPG's because of the flexibility of being able to come and go on my own time and not having to rely on other players to get through content.
In the end though I'll take a good FPS over a RPG. I was brought up on Wolfenstein and Doom. FPS's feel like home.

this.that.and more of it.
I dont have the hrs of hrs of time to play. i want to get online right away and have action. im an immediate satisfaction guy. RPG takes to much investment.

I liked Demon Souls, but man it's frustrating. I played for over an hour one time, then I died. I got up and poured a drink...

I actually thought about breaking out Morrowind last night and then decided that right now, I don't need to be living like a hermit for the next two months.
Easily my favorite RPG of all time.

I'm gonna go with KOTOR for the original Xbox, with Morrowind in a very close 2nd.

KOTOR was good but Morrowind just had so damn much creepy atmosphere. I can't tell you how many times I jumped out of my chair when I got blindsided by a monster in one of those creepy temples.
And on the subject of KOTOR, that brings me back to my point about the bastards wanting the MMORPG money. The canceled part III, then went with a MMORPG. Bastards!
Screw Lucas. Kotor 1 and 2 both had better plots and writing than his prequel movie crap.

I'm the opposite, don't get me wrong I like to get on COD and not have to worry about what level my gun skill is, where I have to go on the map, collect money to get some more ammo, etc... But I always felt you get your money's worth with RPGs. Sure they take many hours to play, but that's the challenge of it. A good RPG you can play for 20 minutes or 2 hours, doesn't matter. It took me about a year and a half to finish through Fallout 3.

Mass Effect 2 was great, and its up for game of the year. I don't think RPGs are dying- they just take longer to develop.
Other RPGs I've enjoyed this year- Dragon Age, FO3, FO: New Vegas, and Fable 3

If Dragon Age were more open-ended I would be more into it.
There HAS to be a way to introduce more random events, ambushes, random dungeons, etc, into these games. I can't stand being locked into their storyline.
I like Dragon Age's look and feel.. but feel like I could make any choice with any character build and still wind up in the same place at the end.

Storyline games and RPG's are out the door unfortunately. Every now and then you get a Mass Effect.
