Facebook launching email on Monday?

Gmail killer?

quote:
Back in February we wrote about Facebook’s secret Project Titan — a web-based email client that we hear is unofficially referred to internally as its “Gmail killer”. Now we’ve heard from sources that this is indeed what’s coming on Monday during Facebook’s special event, alongside personal @facebook.com email addresses for users.
This isn’t a big surprise — the event invites Facebook sent out hinted strongly that the news would have something to do with its Inbox, sparking plenty of speculation that the event could be related to Titan. Our understanding is that this is more than just a UI refresh for Facebook’s existing messaging service with POP access tacked on. Rather, Facebook is building a full-fledged webmail client, and while it may only be in early stages come its launch Monday, there’s a huge amount of potential here.
Facebook has the world’s most popular photos product, the most popular events product, and soon will have a very popular local deals product as well. It can tweak the design of its webmail client to display content from each of these in a seamless fashion (and don’t forget messages from games, or payments via Facebook Credits). And there’s also the social element: Facebook knows who your friends are and how closely you’re connected to them; it can probably do a pretty good job figuring out which personal emails you want to read most and prioritize them accordingly.

Nah. Anything that runs through facebook already runs through my gmail as it is. Its the rare exception when I find someone who doesn't have a gmail account. Someone throws blah@hotmail/yahoo.com at me and I look at them funny.
ETA: You should share this post on facebook.

I hate Facebook. I think it's going to lead to a massive black swan one day.

I can't imagine changing emails again. Google is constantly making Gmail better. It even offered something called Wave which was pretty smart and made email better but no one caught on to it. I am sure I will have all kinds of friends trying to be the first to switch over to it but I guarantee you they will be the dumbest of them.
I am not a huge fan of Facebook. It was cool in college but now I have to look at daily updates from idiots about everything from their lunch at McDonalds to Bible verses.

Wave was great, it was just too transformational, and it necessitated 1) an invite and 2) another account. My expectation is for gmail to slowly morph into Wave over the next few years. BTW I love facebook and check it constantly. You guys are old.
ETA: And there was one guy who kept updating with every meal he ate (like mcdonalds) so I just X'd him from the newsfeed. Problem solved.

I don't like wave because it sucks up too much info like facebook.

I have facebook, but I'm considering terminating the account.

I can see facebook putting a big dent into gmail, although i don't see it as a killer.
for most of my peer group, everything social is already organized through facebook. I like parts of it but I hate facevbook email, its like aol circa 1997. Its terrible. And it lets people spam me.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen a facebook serial killer/rapist yet.

You are cold blooded. I just need to force myself to cut them loose. My fear is that I will de-friend them and it will immediately start suggesting me to them to add. It happened to me after I broke up with my last girlfriend. I immediately started getting suggestions from her sister who I was previously friends with...she defriended me and it basically let me know.

Nah brah, no need to de-friend. When their shite pops up on the news feed, just hover over it and an X appears in the corner (like closing a window). It'll ask you if you want to see their shite any more and you tell it no. I just had to do that with a girl too. De-friending is pretty much a social taboo. There's all kinds of people I'm "friends" with that I talked to once, at an exchange 3 years ago while dressed like a golf pro, that I haven't talked to since. Still can't de-friend.

I do a culling every 6 month or so. Or a common strategy is to accept a friend request from someone, then block them from seeing my wall, photos, info or basically anything.

I just really don't care, to be honest. I've always been aware enough to know to prevent "stuff" from popping up on there that might be detrimental to my well-being. Have you ever gone and read your wall back to its inception? I did that like 3 Sundays ago. Serious fricking mind-trip.

the problem I have is other people posting pictures of me, and then tagging me in them.
My work is pretty laid back but someone snapped a picture of me mooning someone and tagged me in and posted it on my page. Took melike a day to find out since we were camping at the time.

I feel like a totally new person on facebook now. I have hidden everyone but like 4 people. It is almost like it was when I liked facebook. I hope I don't forget all those people can still see my stuff.

Ah see, that's not an issue for me because I'm hyper-connected. This girl took some pictures a few weeks back where I am clearly Lil-Jon-Outta-Your-Mind hammered. Facebook to email, email to the phone, phone always in hand. They were probably up for no more than 3 minutes before I got her to take them down.

See: Me wednesday night at the toys for tots drive.
It's amazing how drunk you can get when people keep asking you to take shots with them, and every time you say no, they come back with, "you gotta do it for the kids".
