Teh service academies on the EC have no interest in joining a BCS conference and trying to keep up in the facilities arms race, no pun intended.

Big East could add TCU and make Villanova a full-time football to grab power from the basketball schools. That would give them the majority they need to kick out the basketball-only schools and give them enough flexibility to poach two teams from the Bevo Ten when they disband in a couple years. I think it's the best move they could make at this juncture.
But why would the 8 non-football members agree to the expansion? I always figured it would be the football teams going Mountain West on the conference and leaving to create their own, brand spanking new conference.

Because the remaining schools know that they are stuck in a conference like the A10 if they let the football schools go. Bye bye ESPN contract if Syracuse, UConn, Louisville, and Pitt are not in the negotiations. The bball schools would love nothing more than to stick it to the football members, but they can't. Depaul, Marquette, St. John's, Providence, Georgetown....only one of those is even a remotely decent name.

Good article. It sounds like as of right now it looks like Villanova and Central Florida are the most likely targets. A new name that i havent heard alot of is UMASS. UMass wants in the Big East badly. Thoughts?

The Big East is going to split. It's inevitable. Adding two football teams isn't going to change that. No way do they have an 18-team conference for basketball. If anything, it'll force Villanova to step up to FBS.
OR
Two non-football teams get the old heave-ho to the A-10 to make room for the two new football teams. Highly doubt this, but who knows?

Rumor had it last year that Southern Miss might go to the Big East, but with their season going the way it is, I doubt it.
If you can't run the table in C-USA, you won't be able to do much better in the Big East . I say this out of frustration of being a Southern Miss alumni.
