Tyrann Mathieu /Morris Claiborne 1 on 1 coverage

With the accuracy of Newton against blitzs is anyone else concerned about these 2 in 1 on 1 coverage situations? Teams even pick on Jai Eugene 1 on 1. Them in 1 on 1 coverage has been the only noticable weakness on our defense this year. It has been disguised because of the DL pressure but when given the opportunity teams have gone directly at both of them in those situations. Anyone else concerned about this?

I am concerned about Cam running by the blitz for a shite ton of yardage.

Theyve been solid all year so no Im not concerned. Im just worried about disciplined defensive assignments. We MUST contain, not overrun.

No. Our 1 on 1 coverage was not as good last year as it could have been because we didn't get any QB pressure last year. With average to above-average QB pressure I trust our athletes' ability to stay in good man coverage long enough for the DLine to force a bad decision or bad throw.
I'm sure they will make some plays against our man coverage, but that's what great offenses do. Hopefully those plays are few and far between and dont end in TD's

Defense is the least of our worries. if the offense moves the ball and does not turn the ball over the defense will do their thing and we win by a touchdown!

not really. it's not that either is bad, actually I think they're good cover guys. a couple times the throws have just been that good.

WE're not going to blitz that much b/c that just gives him lanes to run in.
Assignment D
Man coverage
Load the box
Dare them to pass

That is why we probably wont blitz much. His passing and running is much better against the blitz. We will probably run a containment defense with zone and occasional blitzes.

Mo has been sick in coverage since UNC. Only thing that worries me about him is I don't know how he'd do against a really physical reciever, as he hasn't really gone against one all year. Don't think Auburn has one of those guys.

somewhat, yes
In descending order, these are the people that concern me in pass coverage the most
1) Brandon Taylor - he has a good instinct for run protection and has a slow learning curve in pass protection capability/instincts
2) Jai Eugene - He is too emotional, which leads to inconsistency, and is also not nearly the cover corner we thought when we stole him from Michigan
----to play along, I'll keep going, but not as concerned about these guys------
3) Ty Mathieu - Only because he is so tiny and young (still making mistakes on his angle of attack in coverage)
4) Stephon Francois - Unlike Baker and Sheppard, he is not as fast and instintive, and is not that instinctive in run protection either - he is the biggest weakness on the D IMHO
5) Claiborne - He is a lot like Hawkins and Zenon, but better speed and instincts..He is Johnny on the Spot for INT's, but his pass protection in true cover-corner situations is not as good as it is made out to be - YET.

The times I've seen them get beat were because of unbelievably accurate/pinpoint passes. I don't expect Newton to be that accurate tommorrow. Put some pressure on him in passing situations and I think he'll make some bad decisions.

No, I think our man coverage will be a big advantage for us.
That doesn't mean AU wont beat it a couple of times. CBs are at such a disadvantage, even the BEST get smoked from time to time. That said, our Cbs will be fine.
The biggest factor in this game will be weather or not our offense can sustain drives and keep Newton on the bench.

Mo will be fine against a physical receiver. He's a pretty physically imposing corner at around 6'0" 180 lbs

I actually would rather have Mathieu and Claiborne playing corner. Then we can put Peterson at FS or something spying Newton.

The only other legit WR's we played was West Virginia/FL and instead of picking on Mo they picked on Ty and UF on Jai mainly because our DL has punished every other team. McNeese's WR whipped Mo 1 on 1 on their touchdown. All i am saying is these are the matchups that i am worried about. Plus Les & Chavis are stubborn, they are going to blitz! Which i don't mind because Cam has only faced a solid defense in South Carolina. If you all can not see what i'm sayinig watch replays of the games. I promise you it's a the only weak part on our defense besides Brandon Taylor with playaction & not always staying deep.

auburn does not have a true top quality receiver. As long as the DBs stay on the receivers if newton scrambles, then we will be in good shape in pass coverage. I EXPECT US TO GET A COUPLE OF INTs AGAINST NEWTON AS HE WILL GET FRUSTRATED AT POINTS BY OUR DEFENSE.

You do understand that teams completely stay away from his side in man to man coverage right?

ok are you a coach? This is exactly what i am saying. This could be a problem against a really good QB and we've played what 1? He passed for what 400yards most of them in 1 on 1 coverage? We will slow Newton's running down and make Auburn pass. The fact that they spread the field means that we will be in man (hopefully b/c we aren't that great in the zone including PP.) I'm just saying this matchup will decide the game.

Im not worried about our DBs at all for this weekend. If we play smart and dont get caught looking in the backfield at Newton faking the run then going deep, we will be just fine. I think our D line will get pressure on him alot and force some bad throws from him. Our DBs just need to play smart ball this week and they need to tackle well. Actually, the enitre D needs to tackle well. Newton always seems to have a big play or 2 during games because of missed tackles.

WV attempted to throw on Mo on good bit. He was just right there everytime they tried and broke up the play. From what I remember there was a few plays the WV WR essentially had to break up the play to make sure Mo didn't pick it. Florida threw at him a few times, he gave up that big play to Moore in the fourth.
He's definately not been a weak point of the D besides UNC. He's in there with Baker/Taylor as the one of the best players on the D sans the big three.

Baker i totally agree with but the DL has made it easier for everyone so the coverage hasn't been noticed. I'm not saying they are incapable i am saying this will be Auburn's aim of attack so they better be ready!
