Players said that talk of a "spy" -- someone assigned to shadow Newton exclusively -- was a recipe for defensive disaster. "Never," Sheppard said. "In this league, I doubt that any defensive coordinator tells a player to spy on one guy. When you do that, it opens up a lot of holes in the defense."

Spying him all game would be stupid.

"Wow," LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson said of his one-word reaction to the tally. "That's definitely a lot of points. But those guys scored 60 on Arkansas. We're LSU."

no one player is a "spy". rather, depending on the defensive set, various players will serve as a "spy" for a given call.
the QB position is always accounted for....some require more attention (i.e. Cam), but it is a team effort dictated by position resposibility.

basically this, although I'm sure no one will spy on some plays

I hope not, you never know though. This match up all hinges on LSU passing on Auburn's weak secodary if we can't take advantage it coud get ugly.

Regardless of how he does it, I can promise you that Chavis will account for Cam Newton. That's the side of the ball with the good coaching.

They better. He is the whole team on offense really. I just hope we can slow him down because we wont be stopping him I dont think.

quote:just because he is their whole offense, doesn't mean spying him is the way to go. you play your gaps, and stay in your lanes to stop him. putting a player to spy him WILL NOT WORK.

I'm curious about 3rd and Chavis. Newton is too dangerous to leave unpressured. In those situations what do you think he(Chavis) will do? I have faith in our defense to stop this offense, but we've seen what bending can allow.

My guess would be to let the front 4 try and power through, send one extra guy, then drop 6 into coverage, with the LB's holding their coverage in front of the first down marker to be there in case he runs.
then again, I am no coach, so who knows
