Anyone think like I do and feel Auburn #90's hit on Mallet was excessive? It ocurred on Ark's 1st TD and put Mallet out of the game with a concussion. None of the TV people said anything, but #90 had Mallet down easy enough, then finished the QB off by landing on him full weight.
I don't know what the answer is to this, but it's getting harder and harder on the QBs given the size of the linemen rushing them. Maybe we should go back to the old substitution rules that made it necessary to play both offense and defense. That would lighten everyone up for the sake of endurance. But I don't see any move in that direction.
All I could think about when Mallet was down was that Auburn chop block two years ago on our star defensive lineman.

wasn't a chop block but should have been called a horse collar and how much the NCAA protects QBs that was the biggest BS call ever

Horse collars are legal in college. But, it looked like after he drug him down, he then landed on Mallet's head with his own helmet. That should have been called.

I'm not sure if he dragged him down by the collar. BTW, that gave me a concussion watching it. I've never had 300 lbs dropped on my head and can't imagine was Mallett was feeling.

I didn't think it was excessive, but I am very worried about them chop blocking Nevis.

No.

If you let go on the way down, it isn't a horse collar.

If they chop block Nevis, I hope they have battery shields on their sideline.

regardless if you let go or not, that was a horse collar. it had all the conditions met by the rule. It was a one on one tackle, Mallet's motion was changed due to the pulling action.

Horse collars should be legal anyways.

It's TACKLE football. Mallet is 6'7, 250lbs. The defensive player isn't looking to see if the guy has thrown the ball or not before making the tackle. If you come at a QB half-assed, then there is a good chance he breaks the tackle or at least shrugs it off enough to make a good throw. LSU will have to bring the same type of hit on Newton to bring him down.

looks like he let go before he really pulled on it. k. sheppard did a similar thing a couple weeks ago. pretty heads up to let go.

but the hit after mallet was alread down was excessive and should of been called. it wasn't momentum. he adjusted his fall and aimed for mallet's head.

It wasn't a horse collar tackle. The QB's momentum was going backwards as did the tackle. Horse collars comes into play when the runner is moving forward and the tackle is made pulling the runner backwards. Horse collar does not apply to a ball carrier who is inside the tackle box.

I watched the game plus numerous replays of this hit. It was 100% legal and was not even that violent. Fairley could have legally hit him a lot harder and still been completely clean. In fact, I was very surprised that Mallet was injured by tit.

IMHO - it was a 100% clean hit with no malice intended.

Thats football - lets not sissyfy it more than it already has been.

Here's the rule:

All players are prohibited from grabbing the inside back collar of the shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, and immediately pulling the ball carrier down. This does not apply to a ball carrier, including a potential passer, who is inside the tackle box (Rule 2-34).

Not a horse collar tackle.

I didn't see it that way at all. Looked like Mallett fell backwards underneath him.
