A shooting club that my FIL knows took 7 out of 10 spots at a competition in NV earlier this year. He said that most were either using a wildcat round that they made or a 22-250.

Biggest issue I could see with a 22-250 is wind.

definitely. That .22-250 is shooting a very small piece of lead. The .308 does so well since it uses a heavy projectile and has a very predictable flight pattern.
