This is the discounting that will evolve as the 2010 narrative if the season unfolds to a BCS title...IF, and it is a big IF, but IF we keep winning close games...
On the one hand, many will harken back to the year tOSU won ugly and un-impressively all the way to a national championship win over Miami...But the narrative is already starting to take shape in the event LSU pulls it off to the tune of something like this:
"Lucky Les Miles sold his soul to the devil, as LSU got lucky that North Carolina did not have most of their best players, and then recall the mistake by Derek Dooley with 13 on the field to save the Tigers, and who can forget the perfect fake field goal to facilitate the win in the Swamp...etc, etc, etc..."
Instead of pointing out that LSU will have (being optimistic here, so work with me) 3 BCS Crystal Trophies in 8 years, which should put LSU as the most dominant team BY FAR in the BCS era, and instead of saying that Miles won with 100% his players in validating his 2007 national championship with another just 3 years later in 2010, it will be about pointing out all the discount factors.
Luginbill of ESPN is out in front of this the best right now, as he drilled home the point of how the oblong football had to bounce exactly perfectly, which it did, to allow LSU to win. He will overlook, just like all of his "Expert" friends, that LSU outplayed Florida soundly otherwise, because he can vindicate how wrong he was as an "expert" by hawking the sexy story and the "lucky bounce" excuse, while once again showing that he is not about capable and honest football analysis, he is about his ego and selling for Mickey Mouse at Disney (owners of ESPN/ABC).
We will all know that you have to be very good and very fortunate to win a national title, so cherry picking the bounce of the ball and other factors do not out-measure the preponderance of good play.
Indeed, LSU will be very good and very fortunate to win the title this year (optimist in me talking). Just as is always the case in sports and in college football.

Every team that wins a national championship gets lucky. It's not just an LSU thing

LSU Football: Are the Tigers the Reincarnation of the 2002 OSU Buckeyes?

This. In terms of coaching and talent, there's not a large degree of separation in the top 5 or so teams at the end of the year. Luck is what distinguishes the top 2 from the other three at the end of the day.

What makes this even worse is that the talking heads that say those things couldn't be more wrong. We didndt share anything in 03. The NC trophy is in Baton Rouge. The AP voted USC but The AP holds no watter any longer on determining the NC. Thats what pisses me off when these morons say shite like that. The BCS is the deciding body of college football. Nothing or no one else. If the Boys and girls club of America mailed a NC trophy to a team that didnt play in the BCSNSG, Would the Media consider it a shared championship? In 07, Same rules apply, The BCS is the crowning force, And the BCS put LSU in the game.

Les' problem is that he always "escapes", to get a win against a good team (other than VA Tech '07). This leaves the door open for all of the speculation and innuendo. When you aren't a dominant team and don't know how to put in the kill shot, like the big teams do, you aren't going to be feared. Miles plays for the 4th quarter or the last 2 minutes of a game, relying on luck, a roll of the dice, or a bounce of the ball to go his way. Some times it does, most times it doesn't. Until Les learns how to put teams away, there will always be detractors.

The way I look at it is, USC didn't win the NC game. Nor do they have they trophy so why say it is shared? You didn't make it to the NC game oh well your shite out of luck.

You still mad about 03?

Oh yeah don't forget to mention that your team for the past few years has been basically set up to go to the NC and you blow it by losing to Washington and Stanford and other PAC 10 crap teams. Not to mention you have been barely winning games against people like Virginia and Minnesota. You mad?

quote:We don't have a defense, and are feeling the effects of some crippling sanctions, so for us to go and take it to Stanford on the road last night was anything but upsetting to me. Also, your team is riding its luck, and mark my words, the wheels will come off at some point this season. I am guessing this will happen first up at Auburn, and later when Bama comes to call in Baton Rouge. You have a lot of talent, but as a team, you aren't championship material. At all. What is funny is that you don't seem to know it.

As for not recognizing a split National Championship in 03, that is your right, but it makes you look stupid. It works just fine for me.

I am a huge LM non-fan, but will be the first to give him all the credit if LSU wins the Crystal Ball this year. All of it, but he is not a Jedi yet...

When did these crippling sanctions take effect?
The punishment was recently announced.
It has not had an affect on recruiting since your last class was signed BEFORE the crippl;ing sanctions were announced.
You need to save your Lannie-Boy excuses for at least another year.

You do realize that it's the MEDIA that awards the AP trophy, don't you...?
Of COURSE they're going to recognize the AP poll, IT'S THEIR OWN POLL.
By the way, the AP voted LSU #1 after the 2007 season, so LSU has both trophies, Coaches and AP, for 2007.
