And not feel like he is being misused. Crowton and Miles are two of the more brain dead people i have ever seen. They have a Taylor Martinez and Denard Robinson clone and are too freaking hardheaded or stupid to fully utilize his talents. Regardless if he wanted to be a WR, you at least have to use him like Nebraska and michigan use their QB's and maybe see if it would work. If I was RS watching that game last night would make me sick. Knowing he has all the skills to be a kick arse QB in a system like that.

First of all, look at the conferences they are playing in. Not much defense going on there or speed. The other question is, is RS overrated?

This has been the heartbreak for me. The great recruiting not translating into great playing, and highly talented people being left out there to develop on their own or dry up on the vine. From 2005-07, the talent that was at LSU was mostly in place from previous coaching era (this is not a "gee I miss NS" post). Therefore all that needed to be done mostly was a form of "plug & play" them in their positions. Yes, some slots needed filling, but in broad, general strokes, it wasn't rocket science to see who was next in line. Once it got past that '07-09 phase and required actual scheming and talent development and figuring out where people and plays needed to fit together, it seems like things began to fall apart. First the defense, then the offense - dropped passes become more the norm, very weak QB play and development, etc. This year I'm wanting to believe that maybe we're crawling out of that pit, but certain patterns and what appear to be poor decisions still persist. Lots of unanswered questions for this team and coaching staff. So when we play Florida tomorrow, we will see for sure who we are this year, and who our coaches are for sure. And everyone will know, for sure. All questions will find their answers.

I believe this too. I have seen GC try the things he sees other teams do. He needs to find what works for the talent he has... he seems to have no idea how to do that.

It is simple: If he wants to play on Sundays, he needs to learn the WR position.

No, they really don't. Russell Shepard is not who you think he is.

It's all about the benjamins!! RS sees no future for himself in the NFL as a QB. Look at Pat White! Denard or Martinez have no future there as well.

However, it would seem like we would have some packages for RS at QB. If you mixed it up, and not always have RS run, you could keep the D off balance.

If RS lines up at QB now, everyone knows he is going to run. Crowton doesn't run the Spread like anyone else. He is very predictable. The rare exception was the first play last week where JJ faked the handoff to RS on the jet sweep and kept it. What happened? Tenn all followed RS and wham!!!! JJ scooooooorrrrrrrrrreeeeeees!

That offense will not work in the SEC against the top tier teams. SEC defenses are too fast, too strong, and too big for those HIGH SCHOOL offenses.

Ha! If you use a Frank Broyles' quote, you should attribute Frank Broyles.

Dude give me a break, you think KSU's defense compares to anything in the SEC. I keep using TT as an example for idiots who want leach over here. There offense was tops in the Big 12 and they couldn't beat two middle of the road teams from the SEC in the cotton bowl. KSU would lose to Miss. State, UGA, UT, and probably Vandy.

You DO know Malzahn runs his HS offense in the SEC right?
Nutt ran something similar at Ark and scored bunches vs LSU in 05&06!
Florida? Everyone said Urbans gimmick offense wouldn't work at UF like it did at Utah because the SEC was too fast.

If we can try the option to the short side for 2 years with no success, what is the harm in one or two series of RS in wildcat/read option? Until that happens, we don't need another opinion of why it will/won't work, cause its untested

It's hard to say if a man without a position is overrated. RS is not a QB, he's not an RB and he's not a WR. He's a wrinkle with long-distance TD expectation. Seems like yet another candidate for kick returns. His WR transition is going badly. Usually when the ball is thrown toward Shepard it's an incompletion. Just a classic case of asking a guy to do what he doesn't know how to do. I wouldn't say he's overrated. It's more a case of him not reaching his potential due to coaching strategy. He's primarily a runner. Apparently, he can't throw worth a lick, and he's demonstrating a consistent inability to catch a football. Ridley is obviously the man out of the backfield, but maybe Russell could join him back there once in a while to create a thunder and lightning display. I'd love to see RS more involved, but this wide receiver experiment has been counter-productive, to say the least.

Any other thoughts out there?

Nedped don't think you can write him off this early.

1) it takes time to develope those skills
2) he posseses intangibles you can't coach like leadership, intelligence and desire.
3) he has had JJ throwing to him and none of our recievers are flourshing with him at QB.

Two problems.....
1) Russell Shepard is NOT Taylor Martinez or Denard Robinson. His time in the 40 might be similar but these guys have cutting abilities and just appear to me to be harder to contain than Sheppard. I have not seen that break-it-to-the-house-on-any-play threat with Sheppard ...yet.
2) As others have said, you can't really compare the two and not mention the quality of defenses they've been up against. LSU opponents defenses>> Nebraskas or Michigans.

The catch here is that he has to actually be given the ball or catch it to showcase his potential. Hasn't happened often but when he has it was been something else

Shepard has this ability, the coaches just haven't figured out how to use him. We only run him on one play, and even that is telegraphed to the D because he goes in motion. I seriously think our offensive coaching staff just can't figure out how to utilize him.

im glad you said it first. its honestly depressing for me to think about. this athletic freak has to watch jordan stumble around like a drunk on stilts, day after day after day. rueben, who is every bit as gifted, has to pray for 3 touches a night. ridley has to run into a wall 30 times. lee doesnt get the shot at redemption that he deserves. the defense has to play under the pressure that EVERYTHING is on them. its not fair. they deserve better.
