Positiger here, so don't get me wrong, I'm seriously looking for information from our stat/football history people here.

In college football, are there any examples where a player just wasn't cutting it over a long period of time and the coach stuck with the player and the player just magically began to shine and play at a high level?

My perception (pretty limited IMO) is that this rarely happens and the player just continues to in mediocrity or even gets worse until the coach is forced to replace him, long after it was clear to everyone around that he wasn't getting the job done.

Regardless, I hope all our players and coaches do their best for themselves and the team.

It's FAR more common for a guy to suck it up, get benched, and then come back to light it on fire a year or two later.

hard to find stats on the bc its relative what "cutting it out" means.

I mean u can have a mediocre player and still win games.

As I recall, Jason Campbell was not very good when he was at Auburn until his senior year when he led them to an undefeated season and was drafted into the NFL.

College Football is full of these guys. Some of the recent SEC examples at QB include.

Matthew Stafford
Jason Campbell
Brodie Croyle
Chris Leak

The point is developing QB's (as a general rule) takes time. Most of these guys played early because their schools did not have other options.

I think Va Tech had the same situation a couple of years ago with Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor.

Come on, man. Work with me here. I know it's subjective.

Was this improvement during the season, or was it an improvement of one season over a previous season?

I think this is working out perfectly.
I don't know why others can't see it...
Les has them right. where. he. wants. them.
It's almost TOO easy...

Your question is based on a faulty premise.

It assumes that players that "aren't cutting it" get a long period of time to show their ineptitude. This usually isn't the case. 999 times out of 1000, if you suck, you're going to see the bench sooner rather than later.

Most QB's that don't "cut it" are replaced more so than not. Do you follow other schools programs? Colorado's HC had a horrible QB playing. He gave him about half the season or so before finally benching him. Their fans were booing and in even more of an uproar than we are about JJ. Why? The starting QB Hawkins was the HC's son.

It's been JJ's 3rd year...too much time.

I'm generally a Positiger and Miles-neutral, but I did a little research and found something a little sobering regarding the "end results" for QBs and WRs from The Hat's Okie State tenure....

Looking at those rosters....

I don't remember a single damn one of them.

NOBODY's name jumped out at me as somebody who put up numbers (and yes - I've been an avid NCCAA football watcher/stat enthusiast for a while now).

Funny how everyone has been comparing JJ to Jason Campbell for the last 2 years.

Wrong.

No, it's not based on that premise. It contains that premise as a condition for the analysis.

Don't try so hard to be clever.

I think Chris Leak might be the only example that really applies, and he led one of UF's worst offenses in recent memory, and was often bailed out by the freshman Tebow.
