Why would you want to kill a cougar? They're rare as shite now and fun to spot.

If you walk outside and he's got your puppy or cow in his mouth, that's a different story.

There were wolves in Colorado up until 1940 but I guess some people just can't resist shooting anything that moves. Good Read

Wildlife on your property isn't your possession. The type of hunter I can't stand is the type that shoots anything that moves. Sometimes you have to appreciate wildlife for it's aesthetic value.

I can't stand these jackwipes that think wildlife is nothing more a moving target. The "If it's brown it's down," and "If it flies, it dies" crowd absolutely discredits hunters and hunting and makes all of us who hunt look like a bunch of ignorant, bloodthirsty rednecks.

Those people are why hunters will become an endangered species some day.

Extinct. They're already endangered.

To those that think there haven't been anything but gamecam sightings of cougars in La. Wrong. One was shot out of a tree in downtown Bossier City a couple years ago by Bossier PD.

They had a bear down there too but I think they tranqed the bear. Both following Red River.

1. if you are in an area where cougars roam, you have been gifted in a special way that few can understand.
STRESS CHEMISTRY!!
From now on, as you move around your hunting area, you must act as if you are about to be hit with muscles capable of jumping over a 13 foot fence.

2. Be ready. I recommend you go with a friend who has testicles. If you have to pee, the other guy has your back.

I once saw a running BIG male cougar leap onto a VERY wide two lane road, hit the middle of the road, and jump to the hillside off the road. 1,2.

Remember the old football adage.

"Sometimes you get the bear. Sometimes the bear gets you."

I used to save news clippings of instances where the hunter was killed by the prey. Mostly buck deer sticking their antlers into some hunter who didnt have his weapon at the ready.

A friend was missing 12 head of cattle and 2 cougars have been spotted on his land.

Can he not shoot them to protect his livelihood?

Yes, if he gets a permit.

Here in sunny Ca, they issue a permit if you show the dead cattle with the lion marks.
LINK

You can see that about 100 mt lions per year are shot by permit carriers in CA.

that kind of story (12 dead cattle) certainly happens, near where I live. Some people have to keep dogs, BIG dogs to guard the herd. just like the "olden days". people here hire lone south americans to guard the herd, with the dogs. Poor bastards dont learn english, out there with the cows and dogs.

Cougars indicate a healthy ecosystem, they are apex predators. If you have them on your land, you are doing something right to have them walk through there. Why shoot them when they are worth 10 times as much alive? Set up a trail cam and make some money on the internet. Better still, try ecotourism. People in Europe, particularly England, will pay huge amounts of money to photograph them.
As far as cattle go, unless you are raising cattle for your own personal comsumption, you are raising them for personal gain ($$$). Is a cougar really that much of a threat to your farm? Heck, 2 or 3 dogs decently trained to run cats will keep them off your property indefinately.
Usually, you can get compensation from kills to your cattle, anyway, like ottothewise said. And like someone else said, the cat is state property, whether on your land or not.
