I have a deer hunt coming up in 4 weeks in Idaho. I have a crappy scope and feel it's pretty important to get something with a little better distance and clarity. Today I looked at the Zeiss 3x9x40.....Frickin loved it and priced at $399. Then went into a local hunting store where the owner offered me his Nikon Monarch 4x12x40 for $250. What do ya'll think? Seemed pretty similar to me.....but don't know much about this discontinued version.

I'd go Zeiss hands down, of course it depends on the model. Zeiss has decidedly better optics though and from my experience are great at gathering light.

Another "just like sunglasses" thread. No one who spends $400 on a scope will tell you it's crappy.

Zeiss Conquest is an unbelievably clear scope. Best scope under $1000 IMO.

I've not been to Idaho, my question is how far are you planning on shooting? If Idaho compares to my hunts in Utah, Nevada, or the SW you may be shooting quite a ways. It may pay off to have the extra power in the Nikon.

I own the Zeiss Conquest you mentioned and its a great scope; but dont be lead to believe the Conquest compares to the German made models. The Conquest scopes are great and are lots of bang for the buck. I compare them to a Porsche Boxster or a Harley Sportster.... sure its made by the same company but it sure as heck isnt as nice as the Carrera or the Springer Softail either. The Conquest scopes are really no better than equally priced Nikons or Leupolds..

Zeiss all the way. Way better optics than Nikon and $399 is a steal for scope of that quality. Meopta has some stand alone optics too.

This guy agrees that a Zeiss is the appropriate choice.
