General hunting question

I am just getting into hunting and mainly plan on hunting small game. My question is.. once deer season and squirrel season overlap, how do you keep from walking into an area where someone is deer hunting? Are there certain areas designated for deer hunting? Seems like you can really screw someone's hunt up by walking through an area near their stand. Excuse my ignorance on the subject...
thanks in advance

If you're talking about hunting on public land I wouldn't risk walking around during deer season.

I have little to no personal experience in public land hunting, but from the stories I've heard, this is good advice.

Yeah, I'm talking about public land. My only options are the various WMA's throughout the state.

Wear lots of orange if you choose to do this.

Ask the locals or other people who hunt there.
Chances are that there are people that have been scouting and some areas might be better for deer or better for small game--as opposed to the overlapping that you're talking about.

pick out an area you want to hunt then try and find some locals and see where people are hunting. since it's public land you won't be able to scout out deer stands to keep clear of. definitely don't just go walking around during deer season trying to bust squirrels unless you've done your homework.

If asking the locals as already mentioned isn't an option I would wait till deer season is over (at least rifle). This still gives you about a month to rabbit/squirrel hunt.

Thanks guys - good advice. I definitely don't want to piss people off, or more importantly, get shot.

don't squirrel hunt on WMAs during gun season for deer. just don't do it, ain't worth it.

I'd hunt before rifle season and after. There is plenty of time for small game hunting both before and after.
However, you still have just as much of a right to squirrel hunt during deer season as the deer hunters have. If you walk up on someone while they are deer hunting they will be pissed, but that is public land for ya.
If you want to hunt during deer season I'd recommend finding a good oak tree or two and sitting under them for a couple of hours. You're likely to kill just as many that way as you would walking around.

just do your squirrel hunting before the deer gun season to be safe, and if there are bow hunters in the area, they will whistle at you to let you know they are in the tree, just turn and go the other direction. For just getting into hunting, you are starting off on the right foot wanting to respect other hunters. Good luck this season.

If any of you hunt Squirrels in Thistletwaite WMA, you might want to scout it out before it starts. i herd that they cut a shite loud of trees throughout the whole place.

You may also be able to get by with an air rifle like the gammo whisper. not as noisy and will be less likely to piss people off.

Be careful not to be on a WMA during either sex rifle days, most if not all of them close small game hunting on those days. I usually don't go on WMA's when others are rifle hunting. Since Archery season is pretty much most of squirrel season, I just try to find an area without any vehicles around.

Also, in a hunting club I was in, one of our best deer hunters loved for me to hunt squirrels while he deer hunted. Moved the deer.
