I'll have to say I'm with the OP on this one. There's a time and place for headphones, and being out front as the focus of the pep rally doesn't seem to be it. I always think of football players as a civilian version of the excellence and poise shown by the military while on the parade grounds or in general formation. Can you imagine marching out young soldiers in dress uniforms, receiving awards in front of their families, listening to speeches by generals, all the while wearing head phones? 
But I'm old, been everywhere, done everything, what do I know about what kids today should do or not do?
