Thinking about gettin my 8 year old son one for his birthday. Anybody have one? Are they cool?

Yeah, I bought one for my g/f a year or so ago (one of the DSi versions)
They are fun. There's plenty of games out there. It should be a good gift for an 8-year old I would think.

Badass.
The 3DS is coming soon. Might want to wait for that. Then blow his mind with Zelda, Bomberman, Star Fox, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Kingdom Hearts, Dynasty Warriors, etc.

The DS has an excellent library of games, both for kids around your child's age and for actual gamers.
Just because the specs are N64-caliber doesn't mean there aren't some real gems.

Great gift idea. 8 years is just old enough too.

Yea I bought one for dragon quest IX and just returned it. I had the DSI. Now I'm waiting on the 3ds.

What's the difference between the DS and this DSI? Is the price difference worth it?

The DSi has a camera and can link wirelessly to the Wii where you can download demos and games directly to the DSi from the Wii Shop Channel
I'd seriously wait for the 3DS. Its coming out in 4-5 months and will be able to play all the older DS games.
Ocarina of Time in 3D!

Yeah I'm pretty fired up about this. I grew up on gameboy and it will be cool to get my kid into the same stuff.

My nine year old daughter got the DSi for Christmas last year. She plays it a pretty good bit and it is great for that age group with plenty of titles.

My goddaughter and her brother have DSs (they are 8 and 11), and love them. Those things are pretty cool. Hand-held devices have come a long way since the days of the green and black screens of Gameboy.
Plus, you can connect wirelessly to other DSs and play games against people and shite like that.
People are saying to wait, but if this is for his birthday, and if that is soon, you should be able to get a regular DS for pretty cheap these days...
Just checked Amazon, and you can get some used ones in good condition for like 70-80 bucks.

My daughter has one and she plays with it on almost every trip in the car.

i actually got my 9 year old daughter a DS for her 9th bday ... it is GREAT for the educational games such as math blaster and such because it comes with a stylus and forces the kids to actually write the numbers ... BUT, depending on how much your kid is really into games, movies, music, etc .. the PSP is the way to go .. you can use the PSN network to download movies (she has Avatar on hers) and updates to other games ... the DS doesnt leave much room for upgrading and getting the PSP now might save you money in the long run since it offers more flexibility to fit whatever your child is interested in

I think that the PSP owns the DS in terms of being a better system. But the DS library of games is going to be infinitely more appealing to younger kids.

The PSP selection of games is about one onehundreth of the DS?
DS seems to be the way to go for younger kids no doubt.
Teenager I would lean towards the psp.
