Do you think MT5 will/should be the starter at 2?

Depends on who we add to the roster. As it sits now? Yes I think he should start. Though, I actually hope Belinelli plays alot, I think we could use his skills (hoping anyway).

Does he lose any of the sizzle we saw last year by being a full time starter all season?

probably not since he has CP3 feeding him some open 3's

Belinelli may start but MT would get a lot of minutes as the 6th man. It could be the other way around bc Belinelli could be our playmaker off the bench.

lets start a replace Gil McGregor campaign

I think Belinelli will start. He's taller, and more of a shooter. But MT5 gets the majority of the minutes as the spark plug playmaker off the bench.
Having Belinelli and Peja off the bench together just doesn't make sense to me.
Put a sharp shooter like Peja out there with MT5...yeh that makes sense. Spreads the floor creating opportunities for MT5.

I think it depends on what kind of shape Peja is in. If you can limit his minutes you might get more out of starting Ariza and Peja than Thornton and Ariza.

I'm not sure what to think of him. I've seen some impressive youtube videos but I've also seen some people breaking down stats saying all he's good at is 3 point shooting. If he's just a chucker he's obviously behind Thornton in the rotation which could mean he's 3rd string if they don't start Thornton.

than Thornton?

He's a better 3pt shooter. Thornton is a better scorer (much, much better). Thornton can be lights out from anywhere on the court or could be cold, Belinelli seems to be a 3pt specialist, and rarely cold.

Other than the fact that having Peja and Marco on the court at the same time not working out, it would make more sense for marcus to start. He needs to play at least 30 minutes a game, and he needs to gel with CP3

He can play 30+ minutes and come off the bench though...

im pretty sure they both shot about 38% last year. and thornton was just a rookie...
Posted on 8/16/10 at 2:47 pm to Elleshoe
Yea that's true, I guess he could get his minutes Ginobli style
Posted on 8/16/10 at 2:49 pm to americanoutlaw
Exactly, or Jason Terry. It's not about who starts but who's on the court at certain times throughout the game and who else they are on the floor with.
You just want to match up your players so that you are maximizing every player's contributions.

I don't get why your laughing at what I said. Making yourself seem like the almighty of basketball knowledge.
Belinelli shot .40 and .39 percent the years before. Last year he shot .38 percent to MT5's .37.
Marcus is the better player. But Belinelli is taller and more experienced.
Having Thornton come off the bench with Peja is a very good option. It spreads the floor for Thornton to be a creator and punish teams for coming to help on him.
Your second team as it stands right now if you want Thornton to start. Belinelli, Peja, Songaila. That's to many spot up shooters. Nobody for penetration and pure scoring.
MT5 will most definitely get the majority of minutes but having Belinelli certainly should be an option.

I think people tend to think that starters play together then the bench comes in, and those 5 bench players play together. It's very rare that you have all 5 bench guys in at the same time without certain starters in. You want your starters to rest as much as possible of course, but you also want your players to compliment each other. So you stager when your starters get breaks.
I completely agree with your assessment though. Especially regarding MB vs. MT in terms of being "shooters".
