Rickey Jackson's Speech That He Didn't Read

Good story today HERE
...So instead of reciting the speech that his daughter Rickeyah had written for him, Jackson called a quick audible.
..."It was an excellent, excellent, excellent speech," Bensel said. "Rickey is a great football player. He is not a public speaker."
-------------
As rambling as he was and as much as I chuckled about vegetables in his hometown this story makes it cooler. All World Jerry Rice said some good things but sounded as cardboard and heartless as a 6th grader reading a book report. I'll take Rickey's honesty from the heart- with his supreme badassness on the field anyday!

I agree with you, I'm glad he didn't read it. He came across so genuine, it was a pleasure watching. Rickey came across so humble, I felt like I was watching my brother accept the honor.
Canton benefits from having Rickey there !

i dont care for arse kissers
it was a shitty speech from a shitty public speaker. nothing wrong with that in most situations. this was not the place for a guy like Rickey to go off the cuff, in my humble opinion.

I feel exactly opposite. He is a shitty public speaker. Trying to read a prepared speech would have been more painful because of that. Jerry Rice, an even better speaker, the point that most prolly went "ho hum, who cares?" after a while. (The poor me, I didn't get to enjoy the game was too self indulgent for my taste too). If ya can't intellectually elucidate, then the from the heart approach is a good option.

quote:I agree. I love Jerry Rice and always respected his talent on the field. His speech, although was the right words to say, didn't flow at all. It was like there was a period and a pause after each word, which takes the emotion out of it. Rickey stumbled around and at times had me with both hands on my face thinking to myself "c'mon Rickey wrap it up". But at the end of the day it was from his heart and I can respect that. It made me excited about the day that I can watch Drew dominate on that podium.

Rickey was one of my all-time favorite Saints, but that was the worst speech I have ever heard. About 2 minutes into the speech I really wondering if Rickey might be mentally challenged.

Thanks.
I loved the part of the speech where he stopped saying "hometown"

coulda had a little background music...
There's a black man, with a black cat
Living in a black neighbourhood.
He's got an interstate running through his front yard
Ya know he thinks, he's got it so good.
And there's a women, in the kitchen
Cleaning up the evenin' slop.
And he looks at her and says
'Hey darlin' I remember when you could stop a clock.'
Oh but ain't that America for you and me.
Ain't that America something to see baby
Ain't that America home of the free
Little pinks houses for you and me.

I had forgotten he mentioned Mr. benson could have taken New Orleans to California or San Antonio.
57, my all time favorite Saints player. Congrats Rickey!

I LOVED his speech. I still laugh about the fishing and "vegetables, too" comment.
At first I thought, "OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO Ricky, please don't tell me you haven't prepared a speech." But the more I listened the more I liked it because it just came across as being genuine.
I HATED Emmitt Smith's speech. It was all about ME, ME, ME, My name, ME. I would bet money that a large part of the speech was the crap he reads when he gets paid by corporations to give pep speeches. And, that's how it came across -- like a canned paid for speech.
Ricky's was REAL!
