Stephen Rivers evaluation

per espn:

Just as it was with his brother, if you can get past the unorthodox methods, there is a lot to like about Stephen Rivers as an overall player and competitor. He has tremendous measurables in terms of height and a lanky late-bloomers frame that has a ton of room to add much needed strength and bulk. He possesses a tight, 3/4 delivery that is very compact-- part passer and part pusher. He is a gangly athlete that has yet to grow into his body so there is a lot of upside with him in the same way we feel Tyler Bray was from the 2010 class. He's an above average athlete, but generally is a drop-back passer that needs to be protected and on time to truly be at his best. Has the arm to make all the necessary throws both downfield and outside the numbers when his feet are set and he's balanced. Shows a loose arm the ability to change ball speeds. Considering his size and lankiness most kids can't get rid of the ball as quickly as he can. Flashes good touch on the deep ball. Throws effectively to either side, with good zip on short and intermediate passes, when on the move. Can be very accurate when his feet are under him. Shows the RPMs to fit the ball into tight spots underneath. While it is not always pretty, Rivers is very heady and productive. He finds ways to move the chains by land or air and will deceptively keep plays alive while keeping his eyes downfield to find an available target. He at times is a victim of poor protection that does not allow for him to get set, work through progressions and get into rhythm. As a result, he will make some plays on the run that will impress-- especially when moving to his right. As tall as he is, his delivery point and low elbow negate his height to some degree, but this is not overly concerning. The end result is generally productive and you begin to appreciate Rivers' methods due to the quality resulting from them. He is a late-bloomer with a high ceiling for development.

Pretty much what I was thinking watching his youtube video. Looks like a promising prospect, especially if given time to fill out his frame and get stronger. Seems like a "gamer" and shows good ability to make plays with his feet. My first concern, admittedly small, is on none of the plays on the video did he take a snap from under center. However, if he truly is even a decent athlete, he should be able to learn this quickly.
Hope he's a good kid. His brother was never in any off field trouble I can remember, just runs his mouth too much. All in all, count me in the "happy he committed" group.

I hope he turns out to be as good as his brother.

One thing about his brother, they say he doesn't swear or curse. Pretty cool that he runs his mouth that much and doesn't do those 2 things!

These would all be a blessing to see

Just couldn't leave that one out?

Means he will be wasted unless Crowton goes bye bye before he gets here

Philip Rivers was the perfect role model at NCSU. Everyone bashes him for running his mouth, but I remember an interview when he was with NC State where he said he just loves playing the game and having fun with his teammates and the opposition. He brings an attitude to the game that most QBs do not have, and I actually like that. But the key is what his teammates think, and from all indications, they love him. If Stephen is anything like his brother, I think everyone will be very happy.

the only thing that worried me is him holding the ball wayy to low when in the pocket. Hopefully they can change that and not bother his throwing motion at the same time.

“I really wanted to get an offer from LSU. They really jumped out at me at camp. LSU is an awesome place, and I really fell in love. I think I fit in real well. When the offer came I really didn’t have to think much over.”
“I kept in contact with the coaches from LSU, and even though I had other offers I really stayed focused on them. I have always watched LSU and the tradition, and I’m going to be honored to play there.”
“I was not looking to just try to be Phillip. I needed to be the best situation for me. That’s LSU.” He added, “Playing for Coach Chow was a great opportunity to be given, but the situation at LSU to play big time football there, that is the best situation for me.”
“It’s awesome to know the class I am coming in with. I just need to get the ball to the playmakers, and that is what I think I excel at.”
Perfect. Welcome aboard!

the evaluation you shared is quite promising.
I especially like that he has a sense of where the chains are.

looked like almost all throws were off the back foot in these videos which can be fixed. he does have good pocket presence and senses pressure well (which generally cannot be taught).

His Athens, Ala., high school coach, Allen Creasy, said Rivers was further along than his older brother was at this point in his career.
"He's bigger. He's faster, and he throws the ball better," Creasy told The Baton Rouge Advocate. "That's just the truth. I think Stephen's potential and future are unlimited."

I love the way he keeps his eyes downfield when the play breaks down. I'm no expert, but I think he's going to have a great career.

After watching this film, I really like Rivers and feel we will be ok if we miss out on Ely and the few other QB prospects on our radar. With only a few spots left, if we do miss on the other QB's, I don't think the staff needs to go out and offer another one. Unless ZL goes pro, we should be fine after Jefferson and J. Lee leave QB wise. Rivers seems to have the talent and smarts to play in the SEC and will have time to develop unless he beats out ZL.

I'm much happier with Stephen than I would have been with CJ as a QB.
