What are you guys using for base layers? I've been looking at the underarmor stuff but the price is keeping me from pulling the trigger on a set.

I just love the old fashioned waffle stuff you can get for cheap.
If I am deer hunting and going to be sweating, I like to have the newer high performance stuff.

Does bass pro sell it? I'm heading up there tomorrow. About how much is it compared to underarmor?

I've always used the old school stuff too but been looking at the new stuff alot more. Is it worth the price?

quote:$150.00 for the top and same for the bottom but you will not be cold.

The best stuff I've ever used is called Zyflex. I used to walk off of soccer games in the snow sweating in that stuff. Under Armour may have a huge marketing budget, but there's nothing better than this stuff. It's also 100% waterproof.

That seems a bit out of what I'm wanting to spend on a base layer. I may just get the under armor. It's not that cold to make it worth that much. Any other ideas guys?

From a pure base layers standpoint it is very hard to beat silk. There are a lot of new techno base layers available, some with scent control built into the fabric. I read about a bambo fabric base that has natural scent control and supposedly very good at moisture wicking. The under armor compression base is pretty good in the cold temps.

Polypropylene.
Wicks like crazy. Thin. Cheap.

Oh ok space, I was just picking. That's not a bad price on that stuff either.
I had some polypros before and they worked great but I can't find them anywhere.

I'm a fan of under armor. Know those duck hunts days were the wind is blowing 20+ mph out of the NW and it is below 30F? With the under armor,a pair of good pants and shirt and a very good water proof jacket and waders, you will not feel cold. Also, don't forget a good hat and something to rap around your neck.

Bass Pro in Denham had some Under Armor type stuff on sale clearance this week. Not sure of what the brand was but it felt and looked a lot like the UA stuff, but much cheaper <$20 for a LS shirt didn't see what the bottoms ran.

The one in bossier had something on clearence last week too but the salesman I talked to said it's not the stuff that keeps you warm.

Go to Ranger Joes and buy a set of the Silk Long Johns. Thats what we use in the military as a base layer for cold weather.
Its not as expensive as Under Armor but comes with thumb holes in the sleeves which prevent the sleeves from rising up your arms.
They also have newer Polypros which arent as thick as the old ones.
A layer of the silks, then a thin polypro, and your bibs or coveralls will be all you need.
I used this when i hunted in Wisconsin during the winters I was stationed there.
