Upstream: This is the Exploration and Production phase of the business. It deals with acquiring land, deployment of rigs, geologists locating oil, and the drilling phase where it is exctracted from the ground whether that is offshore or on land.

Midstream: this is the transportation of the oil and gasses via pipeline or other method.

Downstream: Turning oils and gasses into usable products and distributing them to places like gas stations. Oil also goes into many products you use in your daily life, such as plastics, lubricants etc...

Hope this helps.

Tigah bait got it. That's it. Sounds backwards, but yeah upstream is Exploration and Production and downstream is refining etc.

What people don't understand is the number of Jobs that go into making each one of these positions function. This maratorium takes a huge hit to so many industries that most people don't know exist outside of fishing and wildlife. Here is a "short" example.

Upstream: Engineers, accountants, Geologists, Oil rig workers, rig building companies, steel companies, drill pipe producing companies, catering business for offshore rigs, helicopter companies for ferrying workers, government regulation jobs, contracted rig suppliers (These companies provide everything from duct tape, to hand soap, to dishwashing detergent, to spare engine parts for rigs and are contracted by almost all large drilling corporations). You also have people in seismic operations going out of business, rig clothing and safety producers, sonar businesses, lawyers and even researchers whose sole job is to find competitive prices to bid on offshore land plots.

Midstream: Imagine all the different piping companies you have the produce pipe, lay pipe, run the trucks and trains full of crude, engineers checking gauges, operators finding where to send it, accountants figuring out profits.

Downstream: This is probably the least effected area because of the spill. Essentially what is happening, is the other two functions are being sent overseas along with all the various jobs that go along with them. After drilling and shipping it back over, things resume as normal, but not until the damage is done.

Every day that this moratorium is in place, and even a single rig leaves the US, put it into perspective how many jobs are being lost.

Think of it as a river/stream of oil/gas running from the ground to your home.

I don't see refining really getting hurt outside of having to buy more imported oil which just compromises the ssecurity of our country. One of many reasons I think obama is a douche for this. If that is more expensive then it will hurt their crack spread.

Yeah service companies will take a hit. Which valve company do you work for?

we took an initial hit when the rig first exploded in all areas, not much action from rig supply/panel making companies but midstream and downstream has really picked up the past two weeks
