If you are using dry yeast, rehydrate it by boiling 4 oz of water. Let water cool to 80 degrees. Add yeast and let sit for 10 min. stir and add to carboy w/ wort already in it.

I have been brewing for 5 years and have moved from boiling to simply using tap water out of ever-increasing laziness. No ill effects whatsoever.
If you are in BR, consider joining the Red Stick Brewmasters. Lots of good knowledge to be had.
