Watched it again last night after about seven years. I still like it, but it could have been so much more... I think the hero's ability to "Tune" was the biggest negative about the movie... I imagine that the story would have been a lot more satisfying if ordinary humans SOMEHOW emerged victorious.

Spoiler warnings for movies that are a decade old?

Anyway, I LOVED this movie at the time, and visually, it still holds up, but I think a lot of other parts aren't as great as I remembered.

I liked it, film noir.

Great twist. Reminds me of "Child's Play" from "Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense", about the family trapped in a a sealed off house.

I watched it for the first time not to long ago. I enjoyed it, very matrixy except without two bad sequels.
Really enjoyed the story line and thought Rufus Sewell was a perfect fit for Murdoch.
The only thing that held it back for me was Sutherlands terrible acting. They tried to make him a quirky nerd doctor and it was so forced it was hard to bear. That and the final battle scene seemed like it came straight from a Power Rangers episode. But considering the budgit for the film was probably pretty low, I cant hate on that too much.

My pick for most underrated movie. Its a good homage to 40s noir and early German cinema

Loved it, and am not normally a fan of sci-fi, paranormal, suspense, etc..but do love old noir films and euro cinema.

VERY underrated movie. Came out around the same time as The Matrix, so I can understand why it gets overlooked.

I thought Sutherland gave one of his best performances in Dark City.

I own the original. Anyone know if the directors cut is worth a view?

I got the Dark City Blu Ray, and it has the original, and the extended cut. The extended cut is really the one to watch, as it make the movie more cohesive an fluid. A lot of the questions from the original cut are kind of ironed out in the extended cut.

I found the movie fascinating. I'm glad to see you guys liked it as well.

SPOILERS

I do not fully understand your complaint. The hero WAS an ordinary human...in that we humans can overcome anything. We change & adapt.

To the folks asking about the DC:

I recommend picking it up. I believe that there are 4 versions (Theatrical, ReCut, Extended, and Unrated...I believe). I enjoyed the extended version with the director's commentary after watching 2 versions of the film.

Good stuff.

I liked his performance when the movie came out. Then last year I watched it again and after watching many seasons of Jack Bauer his performance in Dark City was a bit disconcerting, I think just because Sutherland has become Jack Bauer and that is not at all what he is playing in Dark City. I had a similar problem with Burn After Reading - the first time I watched it George Clooney, John Malkovich, Brad Pitt, and to a lesser extent Frances McDormand were not playing the characters I was used to from them. It took a while to really get what the Coens were doing and I liked the movie a lot more the second time I watched it.

Dark City is one of my favorites. For some reason I particularly liked William Hurt's role since he seemed to be re-living Inspector Renko from Gorky Park which I think is an under appreciated movie.
