Through some combination of lack of talent, lack of communications ,lack of what the hell ever Garrett couldn`t cut it at LSU. Miles released him to what was during recruiting his second choice MSU. I realize we have sucked for a long time so you don`t have to tell me that believe me we know.

Here`s my question. Why would Miles let Garrett go to his second choice and possibly set a precedent that will come back and bite his arse? At an elete football school there are always going to be 3 star highschool studs that are in for a rude awakening and want a do over and go back to their second choice. What does Miles tell the next disgruntled kid in a similar position to Garrett except his second choice was Alabama ? If Miles says no what`s his position if the kid lawyers up and demands a "Garrett deal"?

he gave his release conditional to not being an SEC school. That is typical.

Call me crazy, but I don't think that it's a LAW to let the kid go to his second choice of school.

If only Miles put that much thought into decisions...if only he could.

No but it would be a precedent (if that were done) for the next guy. I think that's what he meant.

We're still wondering why Miles didn't have the FG unit ready.

Each player is to be evaluated on a case by case basis. If the situation arises again and the kid wants to go to Alabama, you could argue that you don't want the kid going to a much more competitive team than you released the last kid to.

Miles has already set that precedent.

I think it was last year (if not the year before), he let Phelon Jones (highly rated defensive back from Alabama who had fallen pretty far down the depth chart) out of the committment and let him enroll at Alabama under Nick Saban.

I'm sure these things are a case by case situation, but I sense that if the kid is not a starter, Miles tends to be more lenient on not prohibiting the kid to sign at certain schools.

does anyone have a link to his release. I have been away with my dad's surgery the last 2 weeks, but what I remember reading sometime in there was his release was conditional in that he could not attend an SEC school.
When did that change?

Thank you for the explanation but I understand. I was only clarifying for the OP.

He released him to State but no other SEC school.

Have you ever considered that after evaluating Jones they decided that he would only weaken Alabama? If Phelon is buried on our depth chart, he won't do Bama much good either, and that takes up a scholarship that would otherwise be going to a new recruit. Seems like a good plan to me.

As for Garrett... IDK, but I hope the same applies.

So wait....So did Miles send a letter to his house telling the kid his scholly wasn't going to be renewed or did Garrett ask for a release?

Think as a recruiting tool: "If things don't work out for you here, then you can go anywhere else you want...Is Coach X at the other school telling you the same thing? Has he ever done it before - I have."

Seems like it could help with some recruits we want that are otherwise on fence. If the kid is starting or near the top of the depthchart, then he won't leave. If not, it frees up a scholly for someone else that is producing or may produce.

At first I didn't like - but after more consideration I'm OK with it.

this is what I think, this could have been discussed before he signed.

if this is the angle, then its a pretty ingenious method, but it is only as good as the trust between them

Both. The letter went to Garrett's house, so he then turned around and asked for his release. Just because you arent awarded an extension on your scholly doesn't mean you can just go play somewhere else. CG had to ask to be released.

What if a kid is really better than he wants the staff to know but is laying down just because he`s not happy and he knows he`s got Miles by the short hairs because Miles has set a precendent that he(Miles) now has to live with.
