quote:

U.S. Gulf of Mexico production accounts for 30 percent of all U.S.crude oil production (1.6 million barrels a day out of a total 5.3
million barrels per day).  The Gulf of Mexico is one of three top deepwater areas in the world (along with West Africa and Brazil). Because of deepwater activity in the Gulf of Mexico, last year the United States grew its domestic oil production for the first time since 1991. Rising deepwater production also was a factor behind a drop in U.S. oil imports.

quote:

In 2008,the total amount of oil and natural gas discovered in deep water globally
exceeded the volume found onshore and in shallow water combined.

quote:

There have been 14,000 deepwater wells globally; ExxonMobil alone has drilled 262 wells in water depths of 2,500 feet or more.  As I’ve noted in earlier posts, ExxonMobil’s experience is that when proper procedures are
followed, accidents such as the Deepwater Horizon do not occur.

No doubt deepwater drilling can be safe. Just need to follow the regulations already in place.

I don't know where you got the info from but this statement is misleading.

Accidents such as the Deepwater Horizon has never occurred. BP has had more deepwater wells drilled than most oil companies and this is not only there first but it is the first of its kind in the industry.

What is misleading? Not understanding what part of the bold you have an issue with.

I believe the quote comes from Rex Tillerson (ExxonMobil) at the congressional hearings if my memory serves me right.

It is misleading. The way it is said makes it look like Exxon Mobile does it the proper way and that is why they don't have an accident like this.

My point is this is the first kind of accident like this ever. We do not yet know the facts as to why this accident occurred and Exxon Mobil can't say that they do it right without knowing what caused this accident.

The facts are starting to come out and its looking more and more that several poor decisions were made by the personnel on the rig that led to the incident.

I think people have started to treat the BOP system as a accessory/control device for drilling a well and NOT as a safety device.

Thanks TigerFred and mylsuhat for the clarification. I reread it a few times before and wasn't grasping what you were saying. After reading your replies and rereading the entire thread a couple of times I understand now. I'm just a little slow sometimes.
