I am battling a liberal right now on the moratorium and need some percentages to back me up.I am trying to find out some facts about what the percentage of US oil is "harvested" from the Gulf of Mexico waters versus what is harvested from land rigs in the U.S.. Anyone know?

I believe the GOM produces 1/3 of our nations consumption.
Posted on 6/15/10 at 3:32 pm to tgrbaitn08
It produces 1.7 Million Barrels of Oil per day and roughly 7 Billion Cubic Feet of Gas per day

About 1/3rd of oil and just under that in gas.

Boycott Big Oil? Prepare to give up your lifestyle.
I thought it was pretty funny and a slap in the face to all those people who are happy about the moratorium and have no idea how much petroleum is a part of their everyday life.

The moratorium is on deep water drilling only.
It's only a slap in the face to the people who are too stupid to see that the ban is a good thing and will not significantly decrease oil production since there will still be other operating wells.
Just not in deep water.
Duh.

The number I have heard is that deepwater drilling accounts for 40% of all production in the Gulf. So since we supply 33% of the nations oil and 40% of that is now off limits, where do you suggest they plan on making up the rest?
ANWAR?
Shallow water off Florida?
Not going to happen. Duh.
The article was written by a guy from Cal Berkley. Not exactly a friend of industry. He was simply pointing out the hypocracy.

Totally disagree. This is a slap in the face of EVERY O&G job in Louisiana. New regulations are not needed, just enforcement of existing laws and reg's. It's the same with immigration, finance reform, etc. The MMS was being run by HIS staff - yet continued to point to "years of failed policies". Total BS to blame it on the Bush Admin. Just another excuse for Big Government to control yet another aspect of our lives as we once knew. Government is corrupt, clean THAT up and you solve so many problems.

OMG. Now it TOTALLY makes sense.
This is not about oil at all.
This is SOOOO TOTALLY about David Vitter's S&M fetish. Slap in the face...latex and oil...crude all over. Plastic diapers, how could I have not put it all together sooner.
If we eliminate oil, we eliminate a huge chunk of the porn industry. Vibrators, condoms, DIAPERS, strap-ons....
What is Glenn Beck's #.

Once again, the article was written by some guy from Cal Berkley. And you have no idea how to answer any of the facts presented. You just degraded it into a Poli Board flaming session.
So again, how do you propose the country makes up for the sudden decrease of supply while keeping the same demand? You can not fill the void with current inshore drilling. And the good people of Nantucket like their wind farms in someone elsea backyard.

You can't.
So you have to lower the demand.
You are conservative, yes?
Then...conserve.

And you can start by shutting of electricity to your house.

We used to consume about 20 million barrels per day...so if the GOM produces about 1.7 then it's about 10% of total consumption. Don't know the amt of land-based production

Not snark.
When you say "consume" do you think of consuming as "fuel" and transportation or would consuming include the oil that is directed towards plastics and other petro-chemical goods?

Your posts were really troubling me until I read this one. You are obviously an idiot.

and what difference does it make where it come from?
If it comes from Venezuela or the Saudi princes,
its the same to you at the pump.
the oil cartel controls.
1. supply
2. price.
YOu seem to think that oil has USA stamped on it.
Its a commodity and it is sold at world market prices.
ONLY if you had a sovereign oil company, which contracted the wildcatting and drilling and you owned ALL the oil that came from a well, would you get a price cut on the oil.
Any oil that comes up from LEASE is not your oil and not your COUNTRY's oil. It belongs to the leaseholder.
You get a little percentage via the lease contract.
If you had a sovereign oil company, you would own every drop of oil and gas that came up and profit from it depending on your costs and the price you can gouge.
PS> they have not stopped gulf wells from producing. we have stopped DRILLING.

The current ban relates to deepwater drilling of new wells and wells currently being drilled. I am pretty sure production is continuing uninterrupted for deep water wells already in operation. Therefore, the current effect is nonexistant. The question is oil companies moving operations currently underway for new deepwater wells (which is significant) to other locations and countries.

Incorrect. It was thought by this originally, but when a shallow water well got a permit, the White House came down with the quickness and said ALL offshore drilling is banned for at least 6 months.

The GOM production has been declining for years. Deepwater drilling was going to reverse that decline, and decrease our dependence on foreign oil thanks to the ungodly massive reservoirs that were being found that there....and where only getting bigger the further out they looked.
There is zero legitimate reason to think that the ban is a good thing. Especially with the shoot from the hip attitude that the administration is taking. If it would ONLY be for 6 months, it might not be a problem. But I promise you, they will throw in some regulations that serve zero purpose other than to place a de facto ban on deep water drilling...without actually having to deal with the negative publicity of banning it outright (for example, requiring the acoustic shutoff system...this is probably the likeliest way it will take place).
