COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M has grown starry-eyed for the Southeastern Conference, an Aggies insider said Sunday, and A&M considers its overall athletic endeavors grander than the death of a conference rivalry game on Thanksgiving.

A&M’s board of regents likely will meet late this week — perhaps as soon as Thursday — to decide the Aggies’ sporting future, a person with knowledge of the situation said. And that future appears to be the SEC, as the powerful league to the east is prepared to lure A&M away from the clinging-to-hope Big 12, a proposed Pacific-10 affiliation and its storied league rivalry with Texas.

In taking all things in consideration, A&M’s leadership is intrigued by playing in the nation’s premier football conference, drawing big crowds to Kyle Field from SEC fan bases that tend to travel well, and a much bigger annual payout from the league, the insider said. The primary downside, of course, is breaking off of a nearly 100-year league affiliation with rival UT that features a nationally-showcased football game every Thanksgiving.

The statement about 100 years of tradition is such a joke. The Big 12 disbanded the Nebraska/OU rivalry for the sake of money. Texas doesn't have to stop playing aTm.

A lot could happen between now and Thursday.

Well one thing is certain, no matter what happens with additional invites if the Big 12 continues to exist, they will never make the type of money that we have in the SEC or in the Big 10. That 17-20 million being thrown around by the conference commissioner will never happen. You lose the top two schools in the North and think that the television deal will improve? Not a chance.

I've never watched a single Texas/Texas A&M game. Come to think of it, the only Texas games I've ever watched were the BCS games.

I watched our bowl game with A&M a few years ago which covers them as well.

I don't like any of the conference realignment talks but I'd take A&M before Texas in the SEC.

I just vomited thinking about watching a Texas-Tennessee game. My eyes would never recover.

Aggies play in the 12th largest stadium. Florida state has the 10th largest. My preference would be to add aTm in the west and fsu in the east in case anyone calls asking for my opinion.

i agree.. i cant believe anyone buys into this Texas line of bullshite about ending the rivalry if TAMU goes to the SEC..

OOC rivalries are everywhere..

FSU - Florida
UGA - GT
USCw - ND
UK - Louisville
Clemson - USCe

just to name a few..

It's just UT's way of punishing A&M for not doing what UT wants...

You know, I think UT really is A&M's bitch, but not in the conventional sense. UT is acting like a crazy, spoiled housewife at that time of the month, and A&M is her henpecked husband. Now after driving him to consider divorce, she's starting to talk about the children.

A reporter (McIlvoy?) for KPRC (Houston NBC) was on the NBC local affiliate (KXAS) during the Sunday night sports show. He said that his sources say the SEC is the front runner and his best guess is by the end of the week TAMU is in the SEC if an invite is given. The sports show spoke with a reporter from KXAN in Austin regarding TU and a reporter for KFOR in OKC regarding OU/OSU.

Nothing really groundbreaking but there ya go!

Never thought about it like that, but that is just classic there.

FWIW: A&M moving to the SEC would be the best thing to ever happen to them.

i really hope this happens. it would be nice to see a texas school standing up for itself and not letting UT dictate what they do.

Texas is being a bitch b/c A&M wont ride their coat tails if they go to the SEC. A&M will fill their stadium b/c they're in the SEC and Texas wont b/c they're in the pac 27.West coast people dont give 2 shits about football.

If Texas is smart they would go to the big 10. Even then, they're in a geographical fix for traveling fan bases to attend games.

Agreed. It's time for A & M to live up to the line in the Aggie War Hymn which reads,

"Farewell to Texas University...."
