with a normal tv deal (which the SEC has), market size means nothing. what matters is VIEWERS

with a cable deal, market size matters, b/c they can put the channel on the cable package of millions of people who will never watch the channel. who watches doesn't matter for the most part. cox/tuner/comcast/etc will still pay the conference for the channel

If I'm not mistaken, there is a trigger clause in the current TV contracts that allows the conference to renegotiate if a certain market number is met.

you're wrong

the SEC has shown that local/regional support is the best model right now

and that is a risk right now

any tv deal had better be worked out before expansion, or we may frick ourselves

I completly agree.
We are making basically the same point, I think.
SEC cohesiveness, cultural affinity, common passion has turned SEC football into a NATIONWIDE MONSTER.
People everywhere watch SEC football in a way they don't watch Big 12 and Pac-10 football.

How do you figure that when a 5 market share of L.A. is much, much larger than a 40 in N.O?

INTENSITY.
Intensity drives purchase.

no

product on the field led to national appeal. that's from our super fertile recruiting ground, which is from slavery

SEC schools make money because their locals support the program. national appeal doesn't fund us for the most part

tv ratings for big national games don't back this up

it's all about total viewers

product/hype leads to viewers. we have product, not as much hype

adding houston with houston doesn't matter in terms of tv right now. adding it with TAMU matters b/c TAMU watches

Yes it is and the size of the market is paramount. There's a certain point pass which you simply can't pull more viewers...ie 60 market share. You can max a small market, not so with a large one.

i don't want to add TAMU

but to assume their fans wouldn't watch TAMU on national tv almost every week is foolish

Not much brand awareness study at Southern law School, huh ?

You have the first half of it exactly right.
Then you stop.

My experience as a season ticket holder at Colorado when they were a perennial top 5 team loaded with NFL first round picks taught me that local passion has to drive sustainability.

Success on the field is at the top of the list in the SEC. We only want teams that share that philosophy. We WANT to win, So we do, because it's important to us.

You want a Nebraska, an FSU, an A&M in a way that you don't want a Colorado, Mizzou...

They will emphasize football, improve Competition and strengthen your national brand.

I mean seriously SlowFlow, is ESPN planning on cutting the nationwide feed ?
Did I miss something ?
have you ever tried to find the PAC 10 games on a Saturday night ?
Ever been to a sports bar in New York on a Saturday ?
Were they watching the LSU-UF game or the Mizzou-Colorado game?

SEC football is tops because it has an identifiable culture, an easy to understand BRAND.

SEC football is tops b/c we have the best product right now

we don't get the best national ratings compared to big matchups with national programs

the SEC has 2 natioanl programs...UF and Bama. that's it, and i'm reaching with Bama

why is the rose bowl the highest-ranked game every year other than the title game?

how can the rose bowl beat out the sugar, if the SEC has the #1 national appeal?

When you are talking tv, there becomes a certain saturation point where you will always have the same viewers. This means growth occurs by adding new viewership.

then we should only be targeting schools with a well-established base of support to steal

That brand= any given Saturday you will find a compelling, knock-down-dragout matchup in the SEC.
In every other conference "it's the one we've all been waiting for" in a season of snoozers.

it's not even about that

first, it's local support. we watch our teams on tv. this is a constant that won't change muchh

secondly, we support the SEC. if our team isn't playing, we will watch the SEC game on. that's regional support

that's why ESPN/CBS paid so much for our local and regional support. it's constant, it's high, and it won't go away soon

our national appeal is based on our product, but we don't really have teams with national appeal unless they're goin for a title
