Why is the possibility of the Big XII staying together....

...being ignored/discounted.
All of this TAMU talk is moot if the Big XII just picks up a couple of teams and maintains the status quo.
Why are we so sure that won't happen? Just because the Pac-10 has extended invitations to some teams?

Yeah. Texas has $$$ in it's eyes, and the greed factor has kicked in. I wouldn't touch that bet at 500 to 1. Assuming you mean keeping the Big 12 together as-is, less CU and NU.

What's so hard to believe about the Big XII pick up, say, TCU and BYU? Or BYU & Utah? Or some other schools in the region?

Basically, once Nebraska and their fans left for the Big 10, there was no one as attractive for the Big 12 to pick up. Nebraska leaving and tu and ou feeling like they were irreplacable leads to the demise of the Big 12. It also has to do with tu wanting to go to the Pac-X more than they want to try and save the Big 12. This is their opportunity to go where they have always felt they belonged.

KU & Mizzou are rumored to be looking at the MWC. If that happens, stick a fork in the Big 12 IMO.

it is wildly believed losing a storied program like nebrask kills their credibility in north. when they go to reup with their TV contracts, they feel not having a nationally prominent program like nebrask and losing the denver market will cost them significantly. with other teams looking to jump ship puts entire conference on egg shells
lets not forget the bigXII has always been suspect at best. young conference, lacks the historical bond of an SEC or the uniformity of a big10. north resents the south b/c theyve been so dominant. south resents the north b/c theyve been so bad.
bottomline is that if UT is promised significantly more money from a pacX, its in their best interest to go and bring his ugly sisters

The reason schools are leaving the Big12 is money. Adding those schools won't even replace CU and NU, muchless add to the pot.

1. If Big 12 remained viable, does that mean every school that left -- Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Okie State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, and Colorado -- have to pay 9 million dollars as an exit fee. That is 63 million dollars. That eases the pain somewhat.
2. If they kept the BCS bid, if I were Texas A&M, I might stay in the Big 12 and be a big fish in a little pond rather than a small but growing fish in a pond filled with sharks.
If NCAA tried to pull the BCS bid of the Big 12 after realignment, it would stink to high heaven as far as Congress thinks. What does Congress have to do with it? Ummm, plenty. First, in July hearings have already been called to discuss these kinds of issues. I don't think NCAA would pull the BCS bid. Too much fire.
Wow, this Big 12 alignment is a potential gang buster, literally. Would give Boise State and other schools membership in a BCS conference. For those schools, their revenue would go up with new TV contracts.
You never know.

Not hard to believe at all, though I've read Utah is headed to the PAC whatever if A&M doesn't go. My bet, though, is now that the greed factor has kicked in that will overcome any desire to keep the Big 12 together. I would be very, very, very surprised if the schools mentioned don't go to the PAC.

Agree but it appears Texas is more interested in more TV money and research grants associated with the Pac 10. Any of the rest, OU, OKie St., etc. who get an invite to the Pac 10, will follow Texas. What they should do is fortify the Big 12 and have a good chance of retaining an auto BCS bid. They could add TCU, Utah and Boise and still have a pretty darn good regional conference with OU anchoring the conference. As is, there's no way all the Texas teams are going to get a Pac 10 invite; looks like Baylor is the odd man out at this point.

Widely reported:
Any team leaving the conference pays $10m unless the conference votes to disband; which takes 9 votes. With CO and NEB already gone, there's no way to get 9 votes.
Baylor could pick a a million or two by doing nothing. Let CO and NEB and possibly A&M each pay $10m and THEN disband the conference.
