1) months ago Big Ten fires first shot in a public arena. Openly talks about adding more schools to their conference. Motivations are probably primarily a) to convince Notre Dame to finally join the Big Ten and b) to add programs that may add market share/media value to their expanding Big Ten cable network - all of the programs being considered add markets and/or national attention.

2) Nebraska and Colorado are the first to act - Colorado has officially jumped to the PAC and Nebraska is supposedly about to officially jump to the Big 10 - all of this within the last week

3) At the same time as #2 - the PAC Commissioner seeks out reporters to put out the word they are interested in adding multiple schools from the Big 12 - esp Texas, A&M, T Tech, OU, OSU, and Colorado are the schools of interest

4) SEC commissioner Slive has apparently been talking in back channels to major players including at least Texas, A&M, OU, and Ok State over the last few months regarding their interest in heading to the SEC

The big 10 will probably share out comfortably over 20 million per year to Nebraska - in the Big 12 they would have made around 10 million from the conference

Esp over 5-10 years that's a substantial difference that changes programs

Take all these stories with some grains of salt - because you will see slightly different numbers from story to story and that's partly because some are counting different revenue.

But the bottom line is PAC and Big 12 schools have been making a lot less from their conferences than have SEC and Big 10 schools.

And that money gap is something that motivates
