that your administration is making your beloved Longhorns look like cowards? Please hear me out.

I KNOW you are an excellent school. Great academics, great sports, you excel at everything. Congrats. In fact, I believe you would do fine in the SEC, but it appears your higher ups don't think that way. I haven't seen one single shred of evidence that would lead me to believe that going to the PAC-10 or even the Big 10 would be better for you than coming to the SEC.

I keep seeing 'academics' thrown around, but what exactly does 'academics' have to do with a grouping of schools for the purposes of athletic competition? Is there some elite scholars bowl team competition I'm not aware of that makes millions and millions of dollars? Do you get grant money from member institutions? What is it exactly?

The fact is there no way in the world for you not to be perceived as cowards, if you do not come to the SEC. You better get your administration on the same page as you guys, because I KNOW you guys aren't cowards and would love nothing more than to play against the best competition in the best conference in the country.

Do you really think TX gives a shite how people perceive them, especially SEC fans?

The rest of the questions are probably best posted on their message boards; unless you are addressing the 5 TX fans that post on TD.

Texas is on par with UF and UGA in terms of academics, and is far behind Vanderbilt. I am amazed that this subject keeps coming up.

Vince Young must have had a bad day when he bombed the Wonderlick test.

Do you even remotely know how hard it is to get in to Texas?

Yes. It's a basic principle I work under. People care how they are perceived, especially when perception and reality are the same, which is the point of my thread. The reality is that they are cowards for not coming to the SEC AND they will be perceived that way. I have yet to see any valid reasons why Texas would not come to the SEC.

Easier than Michigan. I wonder if the Big 10 is worried Texas will bring down their collective GPA

False. People in Texas only give a shite about people from Texas. They really see everyone else as inferior and below them.

Considering academic standards aren't necessary to acceptance rates, no I don't.

Texas is hard to get into because (i) there's jillions of people in the state and many, many qualified applicants but a finite number of spots, and (ii) it is good value. It isn't Harvard, Stanford, Duke, etc. Remember, Vince Young got in and stayed eligible.

...you need to talk to more TX fans. Their arrogance, and their checkbooks, know no bounds.

One word valid reason is MONEY. If the pot is right, they'll join; if not, they won't. It has nothing to do with being a coward and you know that.

If the SEC really wants UT to join, offer them the best deal so they'll say yes.

It is hard to get into the school because of the volume of applications from texas not because their standards are set high. I live in texas that is all I hear is how they have too many people applying.

It gets thrown around on the Longhorns board whenever "SEC" gets brought up. It's like a programmed, drone response.

See there's where I disagree. They would make the most in the SEC, that is a fact. They can have their own network AND get the ESPN/CBS money. This is a no-brainer, UNLESS there is something else at play...FEAR.

Have you seen this?

quote:

For the life of me, I don't know why so many Texas fans have such a blind spot on the Pac-16 money issue. How any rational human being can look at the current Pac-10/SEC numbers ($200+ million vs. $50+ million) and thinking that adding CU, OSU, OU, Utah, etc. will even out that $150 million disparity is frankly nuts. The Texas market is what it is...whether A&M/Texas go to the Pac-16 or SEC, it's worth the same theoretically so that's a zero-sum game in this analysis. Also, the $150 million disparity doesn't account for the SEC expanding east...to say Virginia Tech, UNC, or Florida (FSU).

There's simply no way that realistically the Pac-16 can deliver financially more than an expanded SEC or even an expanded Big Ten. Think about it. The Pac-10 has the smallest TV revenues by far of the major BCS conferences proposing expansion. Hell, the Big 12's lousy TV deal is greater tha the Pac-10's deal right now. The whole point of the Big 12 "haves" leaving the Big 12 is to shed itself of the "have-nots" and stop letting them survive off their coat tails. So you dump ISU, KSU, etc. and in return you pick up Washington St., Oregon St., and Stanford (great school with national reputation but still only minimal support and small core following). USC just got popped in the mouth by the NCAA and hired Lane Kiffin. There is no guarantee at all that they will return to national prominence in the next 5-7 years.

and this...
quote:

Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds has long talked about setting up the Longhorns’ own television network for those events not covered by the bigger network packages. The Pac-10 financial model, which will look like the Big Ten’s, would not allow for that. The SEC will point out that in their league, schools are allowed to have their own networks and to keep the money they make. The Pac-10 could make some financial concessions to Texas to take this into account.

CIC, AAU, NIH...have a look at where the research money flows and you'll find your answer to your question. And it is a significant amount of money.
(hint, other then Vandy and UF, the SEC doesn't generate nearly the amt as the Big 10 member institutions)

Without a guaranteed increase in ESPN/CBS payout to the SEC, it's not a fact. Do you have a source that states TX's payout should they join the SEC? I'm gonna guess you don't.

Expanding LSN is a big deal for Dodds, but the SEC isn't the only group that has to sign off on it. State politics plays heavy into the issue.

Whoever wrote the opinion on the pac10 deal hasn't done his homework. The legit projected payout is $24m per team and with the Pac10's golden child getting whacked, they will be much more friendly to give TX what it wants in order to bring them in. The expanded Pac10 will encompass 7 of the top 20 TV markets and include 15% of the entire nation. The SEC TV markets aren't close to that number.

It goes back to money. There's a lot of talk, but nothing substantial at this point.
