here's an excerpt from a wc preview in yesterday's g2, a guardian insert.

The team to hate
USA
Yep, you thought we were going to say Germany - but the thing is, our recent record against them isn't too bad. And this time, England have got the Yanks in the group stages. Imagine how insufferable they'll be if they actually beat us, given how pleased with themselves they are anyway. And England do have form with them. In the 1950 World Cup match in Brazil, the USA won 1-0 in a group match. A repeat result doesn't bear thinking about.

Here are some highlights from an article in London.....

"Make no mistake about it, there will be no room for friendship when England take the field and Bob Bradley's side will be taught what football, not as you wrongly call it soccer, is all about."

"However, it would take the rest of the squad to fall victim to a swine flu epidemic, meaning a number of reserves take their place, for the game to start looking like an even contest"

"There is no one in the American team that England's defence will be truly worried about, while it is a different story for Bradley."

lowellz, pleased with ourselves?

sorry, we're not the nation that smugly published headlines like "Best English group since the Beatles"

or

After the US ended Spain's huge undefeated streak, I don't understand how anybody can say this. Sure, England should win, but this statement is beyond ridiculous.
