because they have a finite number of backup plans. they've already said their next idea is the top hat. if they had any confidence in the top hat, they'd have tried it already

T Boone Pickens said last night on Larry King that he did not think it would work. (said something about the way they are injecting the mud unto the blow out preventer it could not be recirculated).

He said that he didn't think anything would stop this until they were able to drill the relief wells.

He was pretty calm and cool and seemed pretty sure about what he was saying.
