Looks like the endangered red snapper will not be over fished this year...This new closure is 75 miles from Belle Pass

Anyone know about closers in lower dularge? Is the Pickets or the Mardi Gras open? How far west does the closer go?

Not anymore...
The closure is approximatly 20 miles west of Coon point. The mardi gras rigs if I remember correctly are about 15 miles from coon pt.

Yeah right there are so many snapper out there it is crazy. Have heard from a few folks that dive that it is insane the amount of Red snapper out ther. And they want to tighten up more on the limits.

I'm sure I'll feel like a nit wit when you answer this, what is the OP?

I tell everyone it is harder to not catch them, than it is to catch them. And just think this year, even before this massive clusterfrick, red snapper season was gonna be closed for the tarpon rodeo this year!

Ive followed that very closely as I fish for Specks and red snapper all in the same trip. (Gotta love Venice!)
In simplistic terms: The govt conducted a study which showed the population was in decline due mostly to the harvesting of too many adult snapper. Apparently the adults breed more eggs by number. The govt then made a recommendation to the gulf states to adopt the 2 bag limit per person. Only Louisiana MS. and I believe AL adopted the new 2 bag limit.
Keep in mind that the oil rigs provided excellent habitat.....FLA does not have them. A new study conducted by a prof from the University of AL refuted the older govt study. The govt agreed their findings might be flawed.
BUT, based on an existing federal law that says once you exceed a total catch limit in a given year the following year must pay the price.(Even though that total catch limit was based on a BS study)
Youre right, locals complained that they were so thick they couldnt help but catch em. NOW it all seems like so long ago even though it was less than 45 days ago. I'm worried that its all moot as many species numbers may get reduced by dispersant/oil clouds....no one knows whats going to happen.
I look for reduced bag limits on all species for years to come while they sort this out.

Today they opened up all inshore waters weast of Bayou Grand Caillou but the areas around instar and coon point still appear closed. Oil has been found in Bay Chien which is awfully close to Montegut and Point Aux Chiene. Cocodrie and Chauvin south of Lake Boudreaux are still F'ed.
