let me get this straight

they create an alternate dimension so that the characters we actually care about can interact again

then

while in this alt universe, they use the finale to flash back to all the scenes in the past that had great emotional impact, so that we re-live it again (because the show has fricked itself to badly they can't create scenes like this on its own anymore)

ALL THE WHILE, the main storyline (or what has become of the main storyline) plods along on the island

That's a really good point, and one might argue was the only way to keep people emotionally invested and watching for the whole season. Never thought about it like that.
