He wanted to be an engineer as is his grandfather. LSU does not want football players that want to major in engineering as they have to many afternoon labs. The LSU coaches discourage recruits from studying engineering and if the potential recruit wants to major in engineering, they are no longer interested.

this is a huge oversimplification
if that was the case, he would have gone to A&M (PETE), Georgia Tech (ME), LSU (ChE), etc.
i have not done the research, but i dont remember hearing about Stanford being an elite engineering school

I don't remember us ever having any shot at Luck.
Isn't Barksdale majoring in engineering? If not, that's what he said when he was recruited.
