What's the MO on Slaid and Ross?
Either one good enough to be the catcher next year over Dozar?

Ross is the better one of the group. He's a top 10 round talent, but I see him slipping to rounds 11-25 with a team selecting him taking one of those one and done offers.
Mainieri is definently selling Tyler the oppurtunity to see signifcant playing time as a freshman which is going to give him alot to think about and will up his asking price.

When I see the name Slaid, I still think aboot Slade Heathcott. Damn it would have been nice to see him in Purple and Gold.

FYI-- Jackson Slaid is a non-scholly player.

Kind of bad example, but in the 07 draft LeMahieu was a top 10 round talent and slid all the way down to the 41st round. The Tigers took a slim chance just by drafting him and when they made their offer he said "sorry, but that's not nearly enough, I'm going to LSU". The Tigers didn't pursue him after that as they went after higher draft picks.

So in other words, it would be a "take it or leave it" type of deal.
Posted on 5/5/10 at 5:26 pm to jembeurt
Kinda and kinda not. A player could in sense change his mind about school in late summer and seek out to make a deal which the club who selected him would then make happen.
For the second tier players who go in say rounds 11-30 the club will usually make an initial offer many times that player saying "no" and not hearing from the club for the rest of the summer.
For the top 10 round selections clubs will make a preliminary offer in hopes of signing the player early and for what they think is a bargain. If that player does not agree on the contract say in the middle of June, the club most often pulls out all the strings in the last week of August in hopes to "seal the deal". The strategy in most cases works and is when most of the big names are signed.
I hope this somewhat helps.

Help someone who doesn't follow highschool baseball too much. Who out of these is probably going pro, is on the fence, good enough but not going, not going, etc. ?

Cecchini will be our third baseman next year if he comes to school. If not, then maybe Koziol.
Adam can you give me a report on Hopkins, Rumbelow, and McCune? I haven't seen much on them, especially Hopkins. Baseball America has another pitcher at LSU-E as the #5 juco prospect in the country headed into the draft.
On Rumbelow I've read that he throws in the 80's and has a pretty good changeup. I've seen a quote from McCune's coach that he sits in the upper 80's but could be a 93-94 type of guy once he fills out (their roster lists him at 6'5 170).
Just wondering if any of those second tier guys may have the stuff to step in and provide quality depth next year or develop into a front line starter down the road.

Koziol is going to be a stud, two way player.
Hopkins is a southpaw who at first glance reminds me in stature similar to that of Ben Alsup. He does throw in the upper 80's and uses the lower half of the zone to control his pitches. His projectabilty is great, I think he's closer to 6'3.
Rumbelow is a pitcher out of Texas. At first glance he's not very tall (only 6'0), but was clocked as high as 92mph at the nationals last year. He's mostly going to sit in the high 80's with that burst of power everynow and then. Out of the three I like his upside the most, seems like if he can get stronger touch up that slider his he could work his way into a startering gig.
McCune is the one I haven't gotten a chance to see this spring. His measurables appear that he's very lanky with what you said alot of room to fill out. I'm hoping to get a report on him soon.
I don't see any of these three forgoing LSU.

Excellent work as always Adam.
My question is this: is Jacoby Jones that much better than Gain Cecchini? At first I thought that Cecchini was the best fielding recruit we had but it seems that the scouts like Jones even more? What's the comparison between the two?

Thanks for the info Adam. I'm going to try to make Destrehan's second round playoff game if it is on Monday. Hopefully he'll be on the mound.

In my opinion, NO. Cecchini is the true "all around baseball player", however Jones is still learning his position and potentially in 5 years has the higher ceiling.
Speed-Almost even (both are FAST)
Hitting-Push
Arm-Cecchini has the better arm.
Fielding-Push
Power-Give the edge to Jones.
Jones still isn't done growing and with his tools scouts salivate over this. Honestly you couldn't go wrong with either prospect, both will succeed in whatever level they pursue whether it be college or minor leagues.
Jones is more of a 2B/SS while Cecchini is a SS/3B.

I would give you full credit for your scouting report.

Not Adam, jut just my .02
Cecchini is probably thought of as a better hitter and all around player, while Jones is a better athlete. With that being said, Cecchini's knee injury/surgery probably has a lot to do with the talk slowing down on him a little.
