Drill Rig Moving In

My father and I are offshore tug captains, he called me alittle while ago to tell me his tug is leaving in the morning to tow and hold in place a floating drill rig. He said they are planning on starting drilling asap and figuring on a few days getting before getting it going. My tug probaly will leave to relieve his tug in a few weeks. Atleast something is moving forward fairly quickly

The rig they are moving now is the UK supermajor Development Driller II. This the Rig BP is planning to use to drill the second relief well. The first relief well was started yesterday by UK supermajor Development Driller III. TransOcean Enterprise is on site and will be used in the efforts to place the Cofferdams and stab the second BOP on the stack if the decide to go in that direction.

Thanx I own and stand by the brand. The only thing that is gonna suck is pulling on the rig for days on end that really sucks

it will take months. on tv tonight they interviewed a Phd from LSU who is advising NOAA on the oil coming up, analyzing it.
they showed a diagram of the relief efforts. He said its going to be months unless the cement coffers work.
he also shared something interesting which was the opposite of what I had feared, since I dont know squat about this kind of thing. He said, if they cant cap it with these three coffers, and they are still drilling when hurricane season comes,
a small hurricane can/will make the oil disperse and be dissolved in an excellent manner.

Just how is this huge arse rig moved in? Obviously boat as the OP is a tug captain BUT I'm wondering is it all in one piece? How does that fit on a boat/barge????

What are you talking about? These rigs are DP rigs they don't need a tug to hold them in place or even tow them. It's not practicle to "hold" a rig in plcae while it drills in 5000' of water.

It moves by it's self with no assist. It's classed as a ship and has no limitations and it's a big SOB!

he may be towing a big barge out there to pump the oil into. He will not be towing a rig and holding it in place. These igs are held in place by sattelites. They are self driven Dynamic Positioning vessles.

I'll try to get some pics. And yes it is a big mf. We've done some moving of not this one but this type before. They do use thrusters but we will be pulling on it to help keep it in place. The thrusters can only do so much. My Dads tug left already and mine is being prepped to go now
