How are the Cajuns doing? If I had to pick a top three it is as follows.

1) Zidane
2) Maradona
3) Van Basten

What exactly have these two done to belong on a list with Pele, Maradona, and Zidane?

It depends if you want to talk in terms of trophies won throughout career, or just the highest level of play they ever reached. IMO you need to allow for the fact that Messi is only 22 and Ronaldo is still only 25 years old.

I'm a firm believer that right now in Rooney, Messi and CR9 we have three players who will be remembered as all time greats. Usually there's one definitive best player, it was Ronaldo, then Zidane, then Ronaldinho, then arguably Kaka, but now we've got three players of that standard. Messi is definitely better than the other two.

As for what Messi's done, he's been flat out dominant for about 2 whole seasons, as was Ronaldo at Man Utd. His goal scoring stats are ridiculous.

I agree with your assessment. Their careers are still unfolding.

Well Pele is not eligible so scratch that but they are the best two players in the world over the past 4 years or so, so that allows them to crack my top 30

ETA: Meph did a much better job in explaining what I tried to say in one sentence, but the reasons he gave is why I listed them

Messi
Van Basten
Gullit
Redondo
Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo (you dumbfricks, stop calling him Ronaldo, there is only ONE)
Maldini
Giggs
Hierro
Zidane

in no particular order, as per the original question.

I agree, but can't you guys try and stay within the tread parameters? Give me your top ten of the last thirty years, not who is going to be great ten years from now.

Raul love? Maybe could, and come to think of it, is a perfect substitute for Gullit (for Raul lovers). Problem is, that opens up the Del Piero can of worms.

Good point. Interchangeable for Giggs maybe?

Pirlo revolutionized the deep-lying playmaker.
