Curley not making it is really Harold Bishop's fault. He makes the sure TD catch before halftime in the T A&M game in Curley's first year and we may still be "Crazy bout Curley".

If I recall Cancienne had major, major problems in the classroom. The John Curtis grad was not a Rhodes Scholar.

I remember that in addition to his non scholarly ways in the classroom, Cancienne was a matador tackle whose main talent on a football field was dodging the pass rush. It was amazing to me that he was as highly rated coming out of high school as he was.

People just don't seem to realize that these are kids who are playing out on the field. Hence, more prone to be affected by psychological and emotional abuse which was doled out in immense proportions during Curley's tenure, especially to Archer recruits.

I also remember some pretty highly touted recruits coming in under Archer, but we had an unreal washout factor back then. To me, this undermines the "Archer couldn't recruit" point of view because he was getting guys that other programs wanted but for whatever reason, they failed to develop or just weren't as good as everyone (not just Archer) thought.
Hallman's best year was 5-6 and I think that was his 3rd. I lived out of state then and don't recall the roster too well, but wouldn't a solid chunk of the recruits on that team have been Archer's?

Bishop had pro written all over him as did Swan, Anthony Marshall, Kevin (of course), and Wes. The biggest mismanagement of potential pro talent on the '88 class was Raymond Smoot. He actually made the Charger's rsoter after leaving LSU. He had all the tools to be a long-term NFL lineman, but Buddy made sure to frick that up. Simnicht was solid and while Ross did play in the arena league for a few years (when it was new and cool), he was a solid SEC starter.
BTW, Jeff had concussion issues and the straw that broke the camel's back was Buddy King issuing a Code Red on him that resulted in him being placed on NCAA Medical. His recruitment had much to do with the fact he had amazing foot work for a big man, but he lacked bulk/strength.
The '88 and '89 classes were cursed with medical issues as well. It was weird but uncontrollable.

I seem to remember Archer making some serious in-roads getting talent out of texas one year but they never took that next step
