Hoage was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 1984 NFL Draft.[3] His NFL career spanned 13 seasons and six teams: the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Houston Oilers, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals. His professional football career ended in 1996.

In 2002, Hoage and his wife, Jennifer, purchased a 26-acre (110,000 m2) vineyard in Paso Robles, California, where they now live. They were named Top New California Wine Producers in 2008 by Wine Spectator. The vineyard is operated as Terry Hoage Vineyards and produces Rhone varietal wines.[4] Hoage produces roughly 2,000 cases a year of wines such as The Hedge a Syrah. The Hedge refers to a pruning technique and the fabled Hedge of the stadium at the University of Georgia. [5] Hoage dedicated his first vintage of The Hedge to his former coach and former UGA athletic director Vince Dooley.
