Where is this guy? Thought he was the fast athlete that LSU was going to pair with Montgomery. I have not heard a bit about him at all.

Uh, didn't he sign with Georgia?

Everyone is saying DE. His mother told me this, several months ago as well. He seems to need to put on a lot of weight for DE, but, haven't seen him, so who knows..

Mingo is a natural, rangy LB. I think it is a mistake to move him to DE.

quote:yep, as in large running down range.. Keeping him at DE will negate most of that, plus, surely being a bit slight to take on the run.
natural, rangy

From Dandy Don:
He is only a RSFR and he is 6'5" 212. Needs to bulk up some. Kevin Minter is more physically ready to play and I think people forget about him because he came from Georgia and committed pretty early in the process, but he was ranked pretty close to where Mingo was.
My question is where did Barrow come from to get considered as a possible starter. Did he improve that much last season?

As for linebackers, Kelvin Sheppard (6'3", 239) is the real deal but needs some help. Ryan Baker, who has missed all of Spring practice with bruised ribs, according to what I have been told, will start at the Buck outside linebacker position. Stefoin Francois (6’1", 207, JR) from East St John high school is in a heated battle with Kevin Minter (6'1", 240, RSFR) from Suwanee, Georgia, and Lamin Barrow (6'2", 212, RSFR) from John Ehret high school in Marrero for the third starting linebacker position.
LSU has three very promising young linebackers in Tahj Jones (6'2", 205, RSFR), Barkevious Mingo (6'5", 212, RSFR) and Josh Johns (6'2", 205, RSFR). The holdback with Jones, Mingo and Johns is that they each need to add 15-20 pounds. Kyle Prater (6'1", 224, SO) and Rocky Duplessis (6'1", 200, RSFR) are also in the mix for playing time.

Agreed. I think we have less depth at LB than DE. I also think Baker takes over as the LB general next year with Mingo and Minter being the other 2 starters. I think by Mingo's junior year he can become our Rolando McClain and one of the best LBs ever at LSU.

He's a DE all the way..practiced there in the fall and is working with the second team defense as a speed rusher off the edge..getting no work at LB. Minter will be the new leader of the LBer's..Minter got most of the snaps with the first team yesterday (just because he is being groomed to fill in for Shep. KS is fine)the second team Outside Backers were Jones and Johns.

I think he'll be a defensive end in name only at least for the next year or so. I would be very surprised if his PT doesn't come as what amounts to a rush OLB in passing situations.
If the coaching staff can find a way to stand him up outside of Montgomery on passing downs...

You may have more info then me. I haven't looked at the scrimmage notes yet, but I just have a hard time believing he is going to beat out some of the younger guys at DE to take over. Will he be good enough (I'm talking future too not just this year) to beat out guys like Montgomery, Aghayere, Ferguson, Allen, and Brockers? I see way too much depth there and not enough at LB, but that is me personally.

Mingo is much like Demarcus Ware and I think he would be an ideal 3-4 OLB.

Is this based on anything other than a few nice head-hunter hits on kickoff coverage?

I saw him yesterday in the crowne plaza hotel

Obviously I am completly wrong. I was thinking Rontavious Wooten for a moment there.

Way to much depth and dont know he can get heavy enough for DE. At 240-250 he would be a perfect OLB imho, Never liked the move to DE
