Welcome to the age of proliferated LSU tv game coverage, sports bars, Blackberry, PS3, Wii, XBox360, Ipod, Hulu, Veoh, TVShack, bit torrent sites, etc..
As outside of Kentucky, it's a factor for most SEC schools in terms of mustering a great hoops fanbase, and sadly with their own students too.
While I agree with your notion, rarely did even in the Dale Brown era, and Brady's best teams, even flirt with packing the place..unless the La necks were fascinated by some Barnum and Bailey aspect('80-'81 monster win streak, John Williams Frosh year, CJ's Frosh year, Shaq era)..
LSU Hoops fans just can't appreciate a solid yeoman team that wins if lacking some "Big Baby" edge to them..like say the '92-'93 Hammink/Owens/Gipson/etc..squad, that kept LSU's "longest streak in the nation" NCAA dancing shoes going, once Shaq had left, and all thought that team would flop on their face.
I love Coach Johnson, yet he is somewhat quiet and understated. Brady's last straw flopping came a bit late, as Bruce Pearl blew up in 2005 with UW-Mil, thus Tenn came calling, after a series of post-Devoe flops. Pearl has that Barnum and Bailey circus promotional quality that Dale Brown had, and for some reason, is needed by LSU fans to draw up hoops support.
And even Dale had to damn near do tent revivals, passing out P&G nets and balls statewide for years and years, and recruiting nationally and internationally, to make LSU Hoops the consistent national top ten to fifteen power he made it.
