Just got it in the mail today from gamefly. what's everyones thoughts on it? So far I'm not diggin it. The skags are annoying and i have no idea whats going on storywise.

This game sucks unless you have some friends to play with, put simply.
It's more lonely than a Bethesda game, the environments are samey, and the novelty of gun loot loses its luster after a while.
It was fun for a little while... still, a mediocre effort from the people who made Half-Life.

i just feel like its a cheap cartoonyish (yes.. thats a made up word) fallout wannabe game.

I agree, although I think the sharpie bordered style is one of the only things keeping this game from being definitively bland.

I don't like matchmaking in general, but in Borderlands it's even more awkward to me.
Maybe you'll find something in this game I didn't... I'm not really a FPS fan to begin with.

I picked it up today and played it for about 2 hours. I kinda like it.. It is pretty fun if you have someone else to play with. It's worth a rental but not worth buying..

definitely not going to care for it if you don't like FPS as it's not a standout fps. It's designed as a looting fps. I was a fan of diablo so looting was enjoyable for me. Like others said, if you dont have at least one friend to play with you are going to get really tired of it quickly. One thing I might say about the weapons, the stats themselves don't tell you everything as I prefer a combat rifle with a higher rate of fire to one with big damage. Also I found the quest items were really lame.

Gearbox didn't make Half-life. Valve made half-life (they don't make mediocre games) and gave Gearbox the right to make Half-life expansions, and to port Half-life from PC to PS2.

Well, as far as I know, they made Blue Shift and Opposing Force. I thought the original was a joint effort with Valve.
At any rate, it doesn't change the fact that I haven't played a mediocre game by them until Borderlands.

Borderlands isn't mediocre. It's a mediocre FPS, but it wasn't meant to be a hardcore FPS. It is a good execution of a looting game for a console. Can you blame the producers for not trying to usurp the likes of MW2? Is it going to be game of the year? Nope. Like all looting games it will have a smaller fanbase that really enjoys finding equipment.

I just find looting to be a small part of the game when you look at the big picture.
Sacred 2 has an amazing loot system. Still a shite game for other reasons.
I guess I wasn't aware of this pocket of gamers who are only concerned with collecting shite.

Fair enough. I was just happy to see something different. I just feel like calling it mediocre out of context is unfair.

I granted it was a good loot game, but said that the volume of guns loses its luster after a while.
I think the range of ammo effects is too limited and most guns are just slightly altered versions of each other... to me it just doesn't work the way it does in a traditional RPG where you have no control over damage output aside from what you have equipped. With a shooter, you have full control over every action and every bullet fired. So a more skilled player can actually be less gear dependent to a certain degree.
I like loot, but a game centered around it isn't really my bag I guess. I still think it's mediocre in its attitude and general gameplay, but I have to concede it has found a niche.

I see your point. I would've liked it to be based more on player skill as well. Another thing I was disappointed in was lack of armor and in turn character customization.

Borderlands was fun for me for about a week. I play on PC though and the multiplayer was broken, it just recently got fixed, but the release was so bad that no one plays anymore, so it's pointless.
Overall an "okay" game. My problems with it:
1) The skill trees suck, not enough differentiation between the classes
2) Nothing to do when you hit level 50, at least if you don't have DLC
3) Designed around Multiplayer, which is broken in the first place, which leads to #4
4) Game isn't fun solo outside of the first day or so
5) Game loses its glamour and passion about halfway through, gets redundant, and feels like the last quarter of the game was rushed
6) The only items you can find are guns, grenades, shields, and a couple customization pieces, there isn't full armor and rings and amulets like in Diablo... the less types of items, the less you need to look on the ground for loot. I didn't even pick up 99% of the stuff that dropped
7) Multiplayer co-op game... with no trading.

I got it for $35 at Best Buy over Xmas. Haven't popped it in yet, but my friend said it was great. We'll see.

Interesting concept, poor execution.
I played it for a few weeks, but quickly traded it in once I grew tired of it.
